Title: DIR-655 with docsis 3
Post by: Eric1987 on September 30, 2011, 04:18:12 PM
So I recently got a 55mbps connection via cox and a docsis 3 modem. However using speedtest and various download tests the fastest I've been able to get is 3.9mbps or 36mbps. What are some settings I can use to increase that? I am super close to the router using a wireless N adapter.

Well first bypass the router and go direct to modem.

Then run a test on Cox's backbone. Reply with what state you live in, and I will reply with the closest one.

If this is still slow, try running your computer in safe mode with networking, and running the test again. If still slow, contact Cox and have them look at your modem and see if they have any suggestions. If fast, and then it slows down when connecting the router, reply as such and then I will make my suggestions.

I've tried everything besides using a wired connection and I cant even come close to those speed we're supposedly paying for. My usual DL speeds are 2.2-3.3mbps. Should I just downgrade to the 25mbps connection they offer for half the price? I was really looking forward to 6mbps+ speeds.

So its the correct speed with your computer direct to the modem?

 http://test.lvcm.com/extended/

Run that, when direct to the modem. If not within 80% of your speed, contact Cox.

I would contact them and see if they have any suggestions. Were you ever getting 55down? Like when the tech was there installing it? Sometimes changes in the registry to your TCP is required to make use of the speed being given to you.

If nothing else, contact them and make sure your signal levels are within spec. And when on the phone, actually ask them what your signal levels are, write them down, and post them here. What you need to know is:

Downstream Power level (Rx)
Upstream Power level (Tx)
Downstream SNR
Upstream SNR
Ask them if they see any big changes in any of those levels over time.

I will also show you how to check yourself. What D3 modem do you have? DPC3010 or SB6120?

Its a DPQ3212 and when the tech installed it we were only getting 12mbps until I fiddled with some settings in the router. I'll give them a call soon thank you guys so much.

I would have someone review your router settings just for back and make sure the router is set up well for you.  ;D

Let me be clear, what we are first looking for is to make sure the connection into your modem is as best as can be. There are issues in the router and the PC  that can effect it. For now, we are just looking at your modem so that will give us a baseline. They aren't going to touch your router. Thats where we come in. :-)

Turn off ALL QoS options.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

I did that and these are my results

The thing is when I set my firewall settings to that my torrents make my internet browsing unusable.

Well how much bandwidth do you have your torents set to take up? Also, how many computers are trying to use the connection at the same time when connected through the router?

Sounds like you need to manage the torrent download client so the torrents are not hogging the bandwidth.

Its not only torrents that I dont get the speed with. Direct downloads I cant even TOUCH 4mbps. I get lucky at 2-2.5mbps.

Like as not your ISP is throttling your downloads...torrents are a HUGE red-flag these days....

Beyond everything else, if the source isn't able to deliver as fast as your ISP pipe, it won't matter how big that pipe is....

Whats your source? I am on the same ISP as he is, and I know they aren't throttling my torrents. :-p At-least not in a general way. In a traffic management way, yes, other traffic like VOIP and streaming gets priority, but that's the way it should be.
