Title: 655 A3 - what is the latest firmware?
Post by: fogha on October 09, 2011, 06:07:20 PM
Hi all,

I am in Canada and have hardware version A3.

I upgraded my firmware last week using the Firmware 'Check Now' button under the Tools menu.  I ended up upgrading to 1.21.  Now 'Check Now' tells me I have the latest version.

Ever since upgrading, my ipad2 periodically loses its wifi connection (every 20-40 minutes).  Apparently this is some sort of issue with the ipad2, but it never happened before I upgraded the firmware.

So, I figured I'd try downgrade - unfortunately I don't remember what version I was previously at. Regardless, when doing a google search on downgrading, I stumble across sites talking about firmware 1.35??

So then I check the firmware versions on the dlink site, I see the 655 does indeed have up to 1.35 available.  So I think, well let's see if the latest firmware helps with my issue. When I try update with this file, I get a message telling me:

"Upload Failed

The uploaded firmware file may not be correct. You may have uploaded a file that is not intended for this device, or the uploaded file may be corrupted.

If the uploaded file is correct, it is possible that the device may be too busy to properly receive it right now. In this case, please try the upload again. It is also possible that you are logged in as a 'user' instead of an 'admin' - only administrators can upload new firmware.

The Gateway will not be reprogrammed."

I am logged in as admin.  Not sure what is going on here.  Is 1.21 really the latest A3 firmware?

Thanks

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

I would try this before upgrading and see. 1.35 is the lastest for A3 HW.

Thanks.  I saw your similar reply to another post.

My Primary and Secondary dns servers just display 0.0.0.0.  My Internet Connection is Dynamic IP
I have turned off QoS.
I do not seem to have an Advnaced DNS Services option.
DNS relay was already on.
Where do I go to setup DHCP reserved address for all devices?
Ipad2 does auto obtain IP address.
I changed for upd Address Restricted and tcp Port and Address Restricted to Endpoint Independent.

I am using mixed n, g, b.  will try play with this if other changes do not fix.
I was using using auto (wpa or wpa2) I have switched to wpa2 as I read apple device play better with wpa2
Have 2 iphone 4s, 2 ipod touchs.  None of these devices are having any connection issues

I hope these changes work.  It is strange that I had no issues before firmware was upgraded to 1.21.

Any ideas why the router would report that 1.21 is the latest firmware and that I am getting the message noted above when I try to upgrade?

You'll find Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses to use under Status/Device Info/Wan Section. Copy and paste these addresses into Setup/Internet/Manual.

You can set up reserved IP addresses under Setup/Networking. Select the work link in the row under Dynamic Clients list, this will auto fill in the Reservation section. Pic a name for each then select ADD.

The servers are probably not properly broadcasting the latest updates. Don't worry about it. You can manually download the updates if you need to and apply them later.

Keep us posted.

Make sure you unzip it first.

If your going to do a FW update, do the following:
Factory reset the router.
Update the FW using the .bin file from the unpacked .zip file.
After the FW was updated, Factory reset once more.
Configure, test and if it's all good, Save the routers configuration to file for future use.

Just wanted to followup.  Looks like one (or a combination of) your suggestions worked.  ipad2 no longer is dropping wifi.  keeping fingers crossed.

and doh.  I was not unzipping the firmware file.  I feel like an utter newbie.  Will stick with 1.21 for now since everything seems to be working.
