Title: Hardware Version
Post by: ccval on February 08, 2009, 10:01:35 AM
I just purchased a DIR-655 unit.  On the box and also the bottom of the router says Hardware version A3.  However, when I logged into the router webpage, it says Hardware Version: A4 on the upper right corner???

I was trying to downgrade the firmware to v1.11 since I am having a lot of drop connection/router restart every few minutes (even on a LAN connection).  But it says the v1.11 firmware is not compatible, I am guessing I have a A4 hardware version?  Then why does it says A3 on the box and the bottom of the unit?  :-\

possible return of hardware to retailer repackaged in the wrong box? or possibly a refurbished unit (a4 hardware) shipped back out by dlink in an incorrect box.  just an unsurprising thought

Strange.  The MAC addresses all match.

Hi ccval,

If you just purchased the unit, return the unit to the store and exchange it for a different DIR-655 Router. Reason for return: Defective labeling, mislabeling. Also it's Serial number could also be wrong. But up to you.

They seem to be as good or better then 1.11

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Firmware/dir655_firmware_121b11_beta02.zip

It's definitely better, but I still get disconnection, but at least not as frequent as before.  I'm really hoping they can release a new firmware (that fixes all the bugs) soon.

Disable the "Enable DNS relay" setting under "Setup->Network Settings->Router Settings"

then enter in OpenDNS address
The addresses for OpenDNS are:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

https://www.opendns.com/homenetwork/start/device/dlink-dir-655

When I disable "Enable DNS relay", I can't get to the internet. ANy ideas as to why this may be happening?

Thanks

For DNS relay to work and assuming you're using DHCP or DHCP Reservation, your computers need to reflect that the gateway is 192.168.0.1 (which is your Router's IP).  If it's any other number, DNS relay won't work.

DHCP should automatically change this for you.  Basically if you make any kind of DNS change to the router, you need to reboot your computers as well (or at least do an ipconfig /renew if you know what that is).

This particular machine is a Mac, and I have entered the router's IP in the "Router" and DNS fields. I'm going to try a reboot. Be right back...

Okay. A reboot did fix it. I'm not sure how to get the Mac to see the new settings without rebooting (still new to the OS).

What is the opinion here regarding the "Enable DNS Relay" setting? Is it better to disable it? If so, what I don't understand is why. Should this theoretically speed some of the look ups because they are cached in the router?  ???

Also, have there been any security issues with Open DNS? I haven't been able to find any, but I'm always cautious when it comes to this type of thing. Is the way they make their money by inserting ads when you MISTYPE an address?

Thanks for any information you may be able to provide.

I already had DNS Replay disabled.  But I'm using Verizon FIOS' DNS addresses.

OpenDNS is very safe, and very friendly.  No ads, no phishing of any kind present.  They are on YOUR side (the consumer).

I use TWC/RR internet, and switched from the ISP DNS servers to OpenDNS.  If I do mistype an address, the page is much more friendlier to look at too!  Just has a logo, and suggestions like any other.  No ads however.

Concerning OpenDNS, does SecureSpot interfere with it?  I couldn't make it work last night.

OpenDNS is the same or slower for me.
