I can't tell from the product information page at http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=509 whether it's USB 2.0 or 3.0.
I'm looking to buy a new external enclosure because I think my current one is faulty, and am wondering if I should spend the extra few dollars on a USB 3.0 enclosure? If the DNS 323 has a USB 2.0 port, then there's really no speed or other advantage in having a USB 3.0 enclosure right? (In which case I'll buy a USB 2.0 enclosure.)

I presume the USB port is 2.0 for the following reason: USB 3.0 was released in 2008. The DNS-323 was released during 2007, which predates USB 3.0 (and that doesn't factor in the DNS-323 design and manufacturing time).
Subsequent manufacturing runs may have made some minor changes to the engineering specifications, so you'll have to get the weigh in of a DNS-323 user in this forum for a more definitive answer. ???

If it is only a few dollars more, I'd go for the USB3 unit. You may want to use it on your computer, satellite/cable PVR, other NAS, laptop etc at some point in the future.

I agree. USB 3.0 is pretty much ubiquitous in consumer level products and these devices are commoditized to the point where the cost delta between USB 2.0 and 3.0 is low enough to justify the upgrade.

On the Ver A1 hardware it was a USB 2.0 port.

I have a couple more questions about the USB port on the DNS 323.
1) What filesystems are supported on the drive connected to the DNS 323's USB port? And of these, which ones in your opinion are the 'best' or would you recommend to use for a brand new 1TB disk?
2) If I've formatted a new disk on another Linux laptop, then put that disk into the USB enclosure and connect it to the DNS 323, first of all will it work? (Or would it need to be formatted BY the DNS 323 itself?) And secondly, will the DNS 323 write any metadata to that disk itself or to any of the filesystems (e.g. the 'unique identifier' it writes to disks that it formats)?

Here's the thing you need to understand - use of the USB port for anything other than a printer or a UPS is not supported by HP, and strictly speaking, outside of the purview of this forum.
To use the USB port for a disk requires that you hack the DNS-323, and once you have done that, you are the one who gets to make things happen - you decide which file systems you want to support - you load the kernal modules to enable that support - by default only ext2 & ext3 are supported.
You'll probably find that you can get more helpful answers to your questions in forums with a bias towards hacking the unit than you do here.
