Hey guys
I recently became the prowd owner of a d-link 325 along with two 1TB hdd's raid 1. I am currently trying to set up my network along with my DIR-655 gigabit router.
I have one question for you. I currently have an external hard disk with all of my data. Which is the best way to transfer all my files quickly to my new NAS?

Is your external HDD a USB drive? The rear of the DNS-325 contains a USB copy function.
- Plug your USB storage device to the USB port on the rear of the DNS-325
- Press and hold the USB Copy/Unmount button on the bottom rear of the DNS-325 for 1-3 seconds.
- The DNS-325 will create a new folder in Volume_1 and copy all of the files from the USB storage device
- To unmount the USB storage device after copying is complete, press and hold the USB Copy/Unmount button for 5 seconds.
- When the USB light switches off, you can remove the USB device.
Please let us know if you can successfully port your files over :)

Ok i think i understand how to do it. Though is there a progress bar of the copying of files or should i keep checking it? Because its about 400GB.
Here some other questions i have.
1. If i want to copy files from the NAS to a portable hard disk can i do it using that USB port on the NAS? or the only way is to copy the files wirelessly? I noticed that my DIR-655 router has a USB port on the back? can i use that one?
2. Do you guys leave the NAS turned on all the time or do you find it better if you turn it on just when you need it?
3. I have set up the NAS with my new DIR-655 router, though i returned to my old router for now due to the fact that my satbox has problem with the new router. If i use my old router with the NAS now, will i have to run the setup wizard again when i go back to my new one? will i have to reformat the drives? Because i am thinking of connecting the NAS now with my old router in order to transfer my files so i am ready when i buy a new satbox.
4. Since i am using 2 x 1TB disks with RAID 1, do i need to use a backup software?

From my understanding, NTFS formatted USB drives are READ ONLY. This may not be the case with EXT2/EXT3 formatted USB drives (you'll have to experiment).

There are different schools of thought on this subject. Speaking for myself, my two DNS-343s were on for over two years. I only shut down my NASs if I'm going to be away for an extended period (e.g. > 1 week). The settings you should be more concerned about are hibernation time, which has a greater impact on wear and tear on the HDDs than turning the unit on/off daily.

The setup wizard is not necessary to configure the DNS-325. The application is designed to help users quickly get the NAS configured and running. Alternatively you could log into the web interface and configure everything manually.
That said, the NAS configuration is completely independent of your router. Connect the NAS to the new router and you'll be up and running. The only difference in operation is that you'll have to use the NAS's new IP address to access the web interface from your browser and remap your network drives (again due to the new IP address).
4. Since i am using 2 x 1TB disks with RAID 1, do i need to use a backup software?
Using RAID 1 the data on both HDDs should be synchronized in real time. The only danger I see is that if you accidentally delete a file or directory in Volume_1, the file/directory will be instantly deleted from Volume_2. The DNS-325 has a Recycling Bin function that moves deleted files to a "Recycle Bin" folder, so you can drag files out that are accidentally deleted. Once files in the Recycle Bin are deleted, they are gone forever. You should enable and test this feature to be sure it's working properly.
I believe this feature is disabled by default, so make sure it's up an running.

Thanks for the post, sorry i took so long, was working with the setup of the NAS.
I have some questions if you can:
1. The temperature is at 40-45 celsius. Is this very hot or is it normal?
2. When i was setting up the NAS, i hadnt selected any of the addons so try to install them now. Everything installs correctly except SqueezeServer. I am using the files in the FTP link under resources. It tells me to go to logitech web site and download latest version and place it under the root. I went and found a tar file, extracted it but i dont know how to install it.
3. I cant seem to find the recycle bin feature you mentioned. What is it called? About the backup, do you think its better to install a realtime backup software like Memeo? How do you handle your own NAS? like i said i am using 2 x 1TB RAID 1.
4. What settings do you suggest for hibernation and in general for smooth operation.
5. About copying from NAS to a usb device, i guess i will have to do it wirelessly. its a shame because it will be very time consuming to copy large data.
6. About the torrent client, is there an option to limit the number of downloads at a time or not?
7. Is it safe to upgrade the firmware to the latest or should i wait for the official?

This temperature falls within the range reported by other users.

I am not familiar with Memeo. I have two DNS devices, where one backs-up to the other. The DNS has incremental backup capability, but does not delete files in the destination, but not in the source. I use a third party software product called "Syncback" to delete theis"difference" between the two devices once a week.

You'll have to ask other users who use the BitTorrent client. You may want to post this as a separate question.

The latest beta software has improvements over the public release firmware.
