Title: Delay when syncing RAID 1
Post by: mrcastle on October 31, 2011, 11:22:37 AM
Im using RAID 1 in 2x2TB Samsung F4 disks.
I can say that Im a little disappointed because I did some tests and for example, when I remove the disk 2 and copy only 200MB to disk 1, that was clear without data and then I put the disk 2 again, it take more than 2 yours to synchronize the disks!!
Only 200MB!!! Why is it happening?

I'm no expert, but my understanding is that it will 'sync' all the content of the disk (that is raw copy from 'good' disk to 'bad' disk)
so 2tb to sync not just 200mb

now how long would it take to do it, don't know. I will probably test this soon on my own raid1 setup with 2x F4, same as you.

Syncing the two disk is only supposed to be used when "repairing" the mirror.
It's not meant as a mean to swap disks and have it backing up on the other.

After the initial build ("sync"), your new or modified files will be written "instantly", so you just need a bit of patience and then it will fly.
