Title: Fastest way to transfer files?
Post by: jb7 on November 08, 2011, 05:03:55 AM
I currently have:

Dns 320 connected to Wireless N router, with the ethernet cable that came with the dns 320

Laptop with wireless N, wirelessly connected to NAS

I am copying files to the NAS via wifi however it is very slow... is there any way I can connect the NAS directly to my laptop? In order to allow me to transfer files quicker?

Thanks

Hi JB7,

I was in the same scenario, except that I use G technology instead of N. When I started to send my files to DNS I did it using wifi connection, but as it is slow I plugged an ethernet cable in my laptop and connected it to my router. This way you will experience a faster speed. Now, as I transfer less files to DNS, I'm using the wifi connection again.
Summarizing, when I wanna transfer a large amount of files, I plug the cable otherwise I use wifi connection.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried this out and it is a bit faster... I now get 10mb/s.. rather than 8mb/s over wifi

Is this normal? still seems slow to me

Note I am copying from a usb drive to the NAS, could this be why its slow?

Remember that wifi is half-duplex. That mean your real speed via wireless card for example (for 802.11g / 54Mbit/s) should be 54 / 2 minus service traffic. Real speed about 25 Mbit/s or 3 MB/s.

So your speed 8-10 MB/s (I suppose you've got 150N wireless router) is great and OK.
