Title: New to the forum
Post by: richardj on November 20, 2011, 11:51:31 AM
Hello everybody, I'm new to the forum and straight off I have a bit of a problem
I have just bought a DIR 825, H/W ver: B1 and F/W Ver: 2.01SS, I have no idea what the SS means. I have tried to update the firmware but the web interface says there is no update available. Am I right in thinking there are updates available? if so how do I go about it and where can I find the updates.

I did find this on the D-Link web site DIR825B1_FW201EUB15.bin but i@m sure there are newer updates available.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

Richard

What region of the world are you located?
For any FW updates, it's best to go to the DLink web site for our region if you need FW updates.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I should have said I'm in the UK. The other problem I have is when I enter a device into MAC Address filtering the router then won't allow me to get onto the net. The internet icon on the front panel stays yellow.

Lets get some info from you before you try to update the FW.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
What is the highest connection speed your ISP modem handles? Mine handles Gb so the globe is blue. For 100Mb It think it's yellow. Will have to check the manual.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 or 5e recommended.

Thanks FurryNutz.

H/W Ver: B1
F/W Ver: 2.01SS

Virgin cable 10 meg. stand alone modem. I'm not sure if this modem handles higher speeds.
The modem is the one ntl provided when they were NTL ntl:250, model No E08C007

Wireless modes mixed G and N
Security mode, WPA/WPA2 PSK

Devices connected mobile phone and Table PC.

Yes I do have cordless phones.

No other WIFI routers.

Have changed the cables.

Ok, just making sure and getting a picture of what you are using.

Just curious how many devices you have to be sure. Phone and a PC?
Having only this many devices may not need Mac Filtering. Are you in a crowded area with other people around?

How are you entering in the Mac Filter?
I presume you are entering the Mac address and selecting Allow the following to access the network.

Ok,

I have my main PC which is hard wired from the cable modem to the router. I then have my android smartphone and a android tablet pc. There are occasions that I enter other devices into the mac address filtering.

Go into the Mac Address filtering section, select allow the following devices to access the network, then enter the mac address of the device/s. When this has been done, the internet lamp on the front panel turns yellow and stays yellow and then I cant access the internet from my main PC.

The network icon in the system try on my PC has a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark in it, if I click to open it, it says there is a problem with the modem(can't remember the exact wording, but it's something along those lines)

I'm not using the DIR 825 at the moment because of the problems I was having. I have gone back to the DIR 615 that I was using.

I contacted D-Link via email and got a reply from them today, they say I can update the routers firmware and they sent me a link for the download. It's version  2.04b02 ALL_Multi_20100826

Thanks for your help so far, it's much appreciated.

I would go ahead and update the FW using the process listed in the FW update sticky.

Let us know how it goes. If you need help, just ask.

This is a bit quicker than I thought. How much interference will cordless phones cause on a wifi network.

My router is upstairs next to my PC.

Upstairs there are 3 cordless phones and 1 down stairs. At the moment I have next to no signal downstairs so using the other devices is all most impossible, the signal upstairs isn't much better apart from the room where the router is.

Any thoughts?

P.S This is using the DIR 615. One of the main reasons for buying the DIR 825 in the hope it might give me better coverage around the house.

Yes, cordless phones can impact wifi routers greatly if running on or hear 2.4Ghz.

Hi FurryNutz,
Flashed the new firmware 2.04EUB02_ALL_Multi to the 825, set it all up and all is working.
The signal is no better around the house than the Dir 615. Downstairs I get no signal at all. I have no idea why it should be like that. If you have any thoughts I would appreciate any help to improve the signal around the house.

Possible other reasons of bad signal is building materials too and distances. You might want to consider getting into a DAP as well to help signals.

G and N mixed.
WPA2 personal
Main PC and then my Android smartphone and android tablet.
Yes cordless phones.
No other wifi router in the house.
Surrounded by other wifi routers. Have downloaded an app called wifi analyzer on my android phone to see what channels the other routers are using. there using channels 11, 14, 1. The app recommended channel 6 for my router which it was already on.

The house is a 1930's 3 bedroom mid terrace, brick built. if that helps.

What's DAP?

I followed your some things to try from post #3

Thanks again for your help.

Having other WiFi near by can effect. AN open channel should work ok though. Might get congestion too.
Cordless phones will impact connectivity if operating near or on 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz.

One of my neighbours has a cheap belkin router and has no problems the wifi coverage around his house. His router is downstairs, his son has his xbox and laptop upstairs and the daughter has a laptop that she uses up and downstairs, all connect with good or very strong signals.

I can pick there wifi network up in my house and get a good signal, never tried it the other way round to see if I can pick my network up in there house.

So what's DAP?

would be a good test to see if you can take the 825 over and test it if he'll let you.

Did you click on the link?

DAP are access point device models by DLink. These act as wireless points to help extend or relay wireless ranges.

Didn't see the link, really must use my glasses more, seen it now, will have a look in a bit.

The guy at D-Link I spoke to suggested these  powerline DHP-W307AV

Don't think my neighbour would let me do that, but he would let me use my phone to scan for my network from with in his house. At least that would give me an idea of how far the signal from the 825 is going, if that makes sense.

Thanks mate. I did see the link for it once I had put my other eyes on. Is this wired to the router? if it is I have problems running cables around the house, new carpets, so don't want to be pulling them.

What do you think of the powerline DHP-W307AV

Title: Re: New to the forum

I think it can be used as a repeater. Might check the specs. I haven't been able to get my hands on one. I hoping for in the future. I have experienced a form of powerline and it seemed to work for general internet usage. Not sure about how well streaming or gaming on it is. Would work well for you I think.

I had a quick look at the repeater and as far as I can see most are from the USA. If you turn the router off, say at night, because of the brightness of the lights on the front panel, does the router loose it's settings?

I did this last night and this morning my phone can't find the network as I set it up, I changed the network name from dlink to something else.

I went into the web interface and the router had changed the network name from the one I put in back to the default dlink one, it also reverted the password. It also changed the security from WPA personal to none.

The router shouldn't loose settings if turned off.
Title: Re: New to the forum

I didn't think it should, but that's what it did. It reverted the network name, password and the security settings back to the default ones. Have re-entered them now, saved them and then went to Tools>system>reboot as the manual says, but not turned the router off and on again to see if the settings have stayed.

Have you saved the configuration to file yet?
Can you do this, then turn off, back and check for settings, then reload the configuration file if the settings are not saved?

This shouldn't loose settings. How long have you had this?
Title: Re: New to the forum
Post by: richardj on November 23, 2011, 10:57:09 AM
Have now saved the configuration to file, just in case. Have just turned it off and waited for about 10 mins. Restarted and it has remembered the settings. Will turn it off to night and on tomorrow morning and see what happens then.

Where did I buy it from, I'll give you one guess........................................ yep ebay, and guess what,..............................................the sellers not answering my emails, have opened a case through ebay because the sellers not replying to emails and the power supply was broken.

At the moment it seems to be working ok. Just one thing, If I turn off the 5ghz side do you think it would help improve the signal around the house?

cheers mate

I see.
Well I would get a new power supply from DLink if you can. That could be a problem if the PS isn't working well.
Keep us posted on the power cycles. Settings should be persistent thru them.

It's possible that single could increase. I do recommend modes and frequencies that are not used, turn them off. Recommend Single modes or mixed G and N modes on 2.4Ghz.

Keep us posted.

The new PS should be here tomorrow some time. Will give it ago with 5Ghz turned off, I guess it's a case of trial and error with these things.

Will let you know what happens when the router has been off over night, fingers crossed it will remember the settings.

Good news, turned the router off last night and have just turned it on this morning and it has retained it's settings. So happy with that.

I got a response from the  ebay seller this morning and they have agreed to a partial refund, so happy with that 2.

Good start to the day.

Hi FurryNutz,
I bought some Solwise powerline adapters, one that connects to the router and a wireless one. I can move the wireless one to anywhere in the house I am at any given time.

I have to say that for what I paid for the pair £52 they are damn good, and quite easy to set up.

If any one is interested here's the link to where I bought them from: http://www.powerlinenetwork.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=pl85-pew-2-sol
