Title: MW3 strict nat problems
Post by: D-RAT on November 29, 2011, 06:24:30 AM
Ok, I know this question is going to be asked to death and I am sorry, but this is driving me insane!  I am trying to play MW3 on my PS3 and it keeps telling me I have a strict nat which results in me constantly being kicked out of lobbies.  I have read and tried every suggestion I can find on the Internet with no success.  So obviously I am using the DIR-655 router.  The PS3 has a static IP.  I have tried forwarding the appropriate ports which changed the nat to moderate for a couple of hours before it went back to strict.  Right now the PS3 is set up in the DMZ, so it should have unrestricted access right?  But PS3 says nat type 2 and MW3 says nat is strict.  The only other thing I can think of to try is to hook the PS3 up directly to the modem and see what happens.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Review the Gaming sticky over on the DGL-4500 forum for PSN. Were in the process of updating it.

Forgot to mention that using a router will only get you NAT type 2 for PSN, NAT 1 is directly connected to the ISP modem, NAT 3 is there is a firewall in the way.

You can apply those Port Forwarding rules to the QoS rules on this router.

Router is hardware version B1, firmware version 2.00NA.
My ISP is Cogeco cable
Modem is RCA DHG525 VOIP - I also get my phone service through Cogeco
Connecting the PS3 directly to the modem fixes the issue and results in an open nat so there must be something I am missing.  I will try the things you have suggested FurryNutz.  Thanks again.

If you have VoIP thru the RCA, then that probably has a router built in.
See if it has a DMZ. If so, reserve the IP address the 655 gets in the Modem and put that IP address in the DMZ on the modem. Then continue with the QoS set up for PSN.

Keep us posted.

This is becoming one of the most common problems on the board huh? Well found another walk through...this one a bit more....colorful. Hope no one is offended.  ;D

http://www.cod4boards.com/forum/showthread.php?252607-Tutorial-Port-Forwarding-PS3 (http://www.cod4boards.com/forum/showthread.php?252607-Tutorial-Port-Forwarding-PS3)

But it looks like no only is MW3 not requesting the correct ports through UPnP, it is requesting the WRONG ports, so some are suggesting you turn off UPnP. The thing about that is then it won't work for anything on your network. So instead, I suggets just disabling it in the PS3. Same effect, but it will still work with other devices on your network. Fallow the directions, and if they don't work, experiment. Game is still new enough that there may be some trial and error.

I saw that...good info.

I thinking the dual NAT is the first issue that needs to be addresses first here if my thinking is correct here.  ::)

Oh no, I checked, its a standard internet/phone modem, or eMTA as they say in the biz. No routing/NAT/Firewall or any of that.

Ok, I fixed it.  I downloaded and installed the 2.03 firmware from
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655_revB/Firmware/dir655_revB_FW_203NA.zip
Put the PS3 in the DMZ and bot a bing open nat.  I thought the current firmware 2.00 was the newest one because when I clicked on the option to check for new firmware in the routers settings it was telling me that I had the current version.  Anyways, thanks for all your help you guys!

Here is a link to the page where I found the answer (if anyone cares)

Hmm, well thats a work around, not a actual fix, since when its in DMZ you can't use QoS or any other router functions. But thank for letting us know. We can use that for the others with the issue. I still think its the game having issues. PC users don't seem to have the issues, because PC's have built in UPnP clients as one of the services running in the background. What DMZ does it take it out of SPI and makes it a catch all for any port that is rejected by NAT, so if start seeing your console getting some weird logs, thats why.

Might have someone on here help you set up the QoS to use with PSN so your taking full advantage of the routers features too. Teamviewer.com (http://www.teamviewer.com) is a good thing.  ;D
