My operating conditions:
DIR-655 operating currently using a 20 MHz channel.
There are at least 2-3 AP's operating on every non-overlapping channel (darn neighbors!)
Laptop with realtek wireless card with one transmit antenna and two receive (Max physical rate for a 20 MHz channel is 65 Mbps down 130 Mbps up)
A wired PC.
When I transfer a large file to and from the wired pc I get 2.2 MBps (17.6 Mbps) up and 5-6 MBps (40-48 Mbps) down max.
My laptop is a 1-2 meters from the DIR-655
Are these typical speeds under my operating conditions?

Yes, these are real world conditions for wireless. On my Mac Book Pro I get about 10Mb-15Mb Down to a wired Gb server when connected at 5Ghz 270Mb connection on one of my APs.
This is the nature of the beast in dealing with wireless. Many variables contribute to wireless performance and there standards.

Thanks, I guess I"ll have to wait for whenever Gb wireless comes out for higher speeds.

Well even then Gb wireless, if they get that far, you'll probably see the same things. Even on wired connections, we see the same thing. I've got all Gb wired here. At most I see 50-60Mb downloads from my server to a PC.

True, Gb wireless will also most likely suffer from high protocol overhead but at least it will still have faster real-world speeds.

Ya I hope so...wireless has always been a crazy thing to deal with. Will see though. I haven't had a chance to experience the newer 400Mb connection speeds yet. However I don't have anything that supports that so...will find out later on I guess.
