Title: will this router help with my xbox lag?
Post by: makokiller on December 10, 2011, 12:48:11 PM
Hi, just wondering if this router will help me with my lag on xbox? My download speeds are between 45 to 50 meg but my upload speed is runs about 5 meg. Will this router help with this? as I believe this is causing my lag problem.

It will ensure your system, network and your xbox will perform at there best. You need to review the XBL sticky in this forum to get up Gamefuel. Works great. You will see some lag however if your system is set up well, the lag will not come from you. Lag propagates from ISP traffic, servers and other XBL users and there network systems. The only thing you can ensure is that your system is set up well. This will help with that.

If you need additional help, Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer. (http://www.teamviewer.com)

What Furry said.

Sometimes the lag is from the network (i.e., game servers, ISP, etc.) not from YOUR network.   ;)

What kind of Fiber do you have? Is there a ISP MODEM? or just comes out from a wall?
There is some configuration issues with Fiber I think.
Let us know what this is so we can better help you out. YOu'll like the 4500. Greatest router for gaming man.

Furry, the name of the router is Billion, the fiber is from my phone company here in upstate ny. I get super fast speeds between 45 to 50 m down and around 5 m up, so do you think that this router will be able to help me out with the lag problem? thanks for all of your help with this, I just want to be sure that I am not buying something that will not work for me. :)

Do you have other devices or PCs connected to the router when you are gaming?
Yes this router will help with the lag however again, you still still see lag on XBL from other sources. However your system will be in good shame and should never be a source of origin for lag on your network.

Yeah I have other things hooked to this router, and also have another router on this as well. The main router (billion) is in the basement, and the other is on the first floor, so that I can reach the other floors in my house. MY dsl that I had before was only about 1.5 down and around 256 up, so this setup is a million times faster than what I had. Has there been trouble hooking this router up to fiber?

We have seen some minor configuration issues. Remember having 2 routers on the same line, each one is trying to do the same thing. This introduces a double NAT or translation condition. On one side of a router is the Public IP address that comes from an ISP. This goes thru the router and turns into a Private IP address, i.e. 192.168. Along with other traffic and information. Putting another router online causes some of the traffic data to be misinterpreted causing some applications, XBL, or data to not be routed correctly. Most of this can be fixed by having the 1st or host router in the line to be bridged, effectively turning off it's internal router functions and passing along all data and public IP address information to the 2nd router. We've seen this mostly in DSL modem systems. If this can't be done, if the 1st routers has a DMZ option, putting the 2nd routers IP address it gets on the WAN side from the 1st router into the DMZ of the 1st router will resolve the double NAT issue in most cases. Seen this in some Arris cable modem systems. Barf.

Most Fiber systems I believe can pass along a public IP address to a external router. I would talk to your ISP and ask them about this and the support of an additional router on the line. I presume that since you have one already, it should be ok.

One thing you can do to check what you have now, look at the 2nd routers web page and look at the WAN side status. Look at the WAN IP address, does it show a 192.168 or a ##.##.###.###?

Over all, you'll need this router online, if you have other devices online while your gaming, this is the router that will help manage that and keep LAG down to a minimum

Thanks for all of the info on this, I will check with my phone company on this issue. Everything else has been working just fine like hulu, netflix etc. only thing I see a lag with is on xbox. The only reason that I put on another router was just to get more range with the wireless. Maybe with the new router I can get rid of the second one, and just mount the new one up on the first floor.

Good to hear man. Glad it's working.

I usually turn of other options like WISH, Protected WiFi, Short Gi. Options that you don't need or use. Member you can always turn them on later on if you need.
Save of the routers configuration to file too when your all done so if something happens and you have to do a factory reset, just reload the configuration file and your set up again.

Enjoy.

hey here's one question. For some reason, and I just checked this, all of the lines that connect to my hub do not work, only the cat 5's that are connected to my router itself. Is there some type of setting that I am missing here? I mean hey it should just work on my switch but it does not. the lights come on but no internet??

Hub? What kind of hub is this?

I recommend using CAT6 cables on everything. IT's cheap. Possible that some old cables might not work anymore.

just a 8 port hub for more internet connections.

This a Hub or a Switch?
Make and model?

If you bypass the hub, does the device work? I presume it will.

yeah it works when bypassed. I think I found the problem it was a bad wire going to the switch, I am trying to set up my directv receiver to the internet, I used to just plug it in to the router and it would work, do I need to put in the ip address of the receiver or something? like I did for the xbox?

where would I put the ip address in?
Title: Re: will this router help with my xbox lag?

On the router under Networking, same place you did for the xbox.
Just connect the Rcvr and it should appear under the list of Dynamic Clients. Select the Reserve work link on the row.

I recommend reserving IP addresses for ALL devices connecting to the router.

why would my receiver not automatically pick up on the router? it has an ip address of 192.168.1.106 is there a setting that maybe I need to check? And I do not see it in the Dynamic Clients.

did you put in in the Rcvr? Rcvr should be set for automatic or auto obtain an IP address, if the has the function, it should.

Does it appear in the list on the router?

Did you set it manually in the Rcvr?

should I change the DHCP address range? It is set to stop at 192.168.0.199

Thanks for you help dude, I will just call directv tomorrow on this. I need to know what ip address and default gateway and dns to put into the receiver.
Title: Re: will this router help with my xbox lag?

Ok, the IP should be any IP thats not being used and the DNS should be either the routers IP address or what is listed under Status/Device Status/Wan section.
