I have a dir-655 xtreme N gigabit router with 2.03NA version firmware. The wireless signal will suddenly and randomly disappear from my laptop. I checked the ‘’properties’’ of the network connected … it remains on the same channel when it reconnects so I figure it’s not a channel issue.
I have reviewed this forum for hours and have made many changes to my settings, but nothing seems to keep the wireless signal from stopping.
Computer: dell inspiron 6400
OS: windows XP pro (sp3)
ISP service: DSL
Modem: stand alone (Sagemcom 4300)
Router: dlink / xtremeN gigabit router / dir655
Set for mixed g, n and b wireless mode
Security: wpa-personnal / TKIP
Firmware: version 2.03NA
Router settings:
I'm using the DHCP settings.
Turned off: QoS, Advanced DNS services, Short GI
Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
DNS Relay under Setup/Networking is enabled.(tried it turned off and didn’t fix the problem)
My phones operate on 5Ghz.
I’ve been working on this for two days. What other tests can be done to fix the problem?
HELP!!!! My frustration level is peaking…..
Thank you for your concern!!!

Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out.
Turn off Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Still disconnect after trying proposed config.

Do you get any disconnect when directly wired to the router? Wondering if the router fully disconnects or if there is a problem with WiFi.
Let us know if you have any other WiFi routers near by...
Also on your ISP Modem:
SpeedStream 5100 (https://windstream.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/467/~/bridging-gigaset%2Fsagem-4300-modem)

disconnects when hardwired to the router but not if connected to the modem
-
I see so it disconnects both wired and wireless.
Check the logs on the router, any specific entries when it disconnects?
I would swap out cables between the ISP modem and router and test.
Turn off the WiFi radio and test once more wired and see if it disconnects?
Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer. (http://www.teamviewer.com)

Whats the WAN port speed set for on the 655? I presume Auto, try manual 10 and 100?
Seems like the 655 is loosing connection with the ISP modem.
Any available log entries on the ISP Modem by chance?
Is this modem in standard mode or bridged mode?
Any chance you have a neighbor or friend you can take the router too and put it on there system?
One test you can try, disconnect the 655 and see if you can maintain a connection with the routers web page. I presume you should.
-
If i'm disconnect from the router, I don't have any access to the router's web page...
Also, I tried to connect to 192.168.254.254. to config my modem and the browser tells me this page can't be reached...
-
Even when wired your not getting the routers web page? What browser are you using?
Same thing happen with Opera or FF?
Open a DOS command box and PING the ip address of the router and IP address of your network card. Any response back?
How about if you disconnect the router from the ISP Modem and just connect to the router and review the routers web page on a wired connection? If after this your keep loosing connection, I suppose the router is bad, after swaping cables, connections. When did you get this router?
You could try a FW update and reload the code and see if it will clear this up.
Any 3rd party security applications running?
-
wan port speed is set at auto (10-100)
-
Try manual 10 then 100 to test?

Did you follow the FW update sticky process listed here in the forums?

Teamviewer is a remote application that lets remote users view and mouse around on your computer while you are watching. I use it to help people on here with there router settings. Nice little program. Safe to use. I could probably review your router settings with you.

tough to keep with you bcause the connection keeps dropping..

Wheew, what a mess. LOL. GR, let us know what if your sister exhibits the same problem with the router. If so then I'll call the router bad. if not, then theres a probable issue with the ISP modem and or phone lines too. Keep us posted. Hope to figure it out.
-
Hi,
Went to my sister's place...connected the router...easily connected with her Mac laptop but failed to connect with her Hp laptop...in fact it connected with the Hp but it was extremely slow...
went to the store where I bought the router and exchanged it for a new one...installed it ...but does the same thing...keeps disconnecting.... ??? :'(
-
Did your sisters Mac exhibit any of the disconnections while surfing or watching youtube while at her place??
-
nope it went perfectly well and fast transmission too...
-
any suggestions or thoughts...should I buy a different router????
-
Does she have the same ISP modem that you do?
I'm leaning towards a problem with your ISP modem or phone lines causing an issue here. You've now confirmed that this model router works well at your sisters place. There has something got to be going on with your ISP system. Make sure the Phone lines are in good condition. Make sure each phone attached is filtered correctly so they wont interfere with the line and they won't pick up the DSL noise. I would have a tech or telephone tech come out and check the wires from the house to the telephone pole to make sure they are working well. I have seen some cases where those lines are messed up that effects the entire network system down to the router.
It's possible that there could be an incompatibility issue with the ISP modem and router. I might ask the ISP for a new or updated DSL modem. You can always buy your own and avoid any rental fees.
Let us know what your sister has.
-
One more test you can do, swap routers with your sister for a day or 2. See if her router works on your system, if she has one.
-
I'll check with my sister first then I'll call the ISP if her modem does the same...I'll get back to you as soon as this is all done...There has to be a solution....Gee...I hate it when I can't find it...
Thanks again for you help....your time is greatly appreciated.
Have a nice evening Robert.

I'M now connected with a dlink air plus Xtreme G di-624..borrowed from my neighbour... and everything is working fine...
Watching a film for the last 20 min and nervier disconnected...so I guess the modem and the telephone lines are ok...
The dir 655 seems incompatible with my computer or with the modem...
I think I will try to exchange my router for a air plus xtreme G dir-624...Your thougths on this????
-
Possible it's incompatible with the modem. Sorry that the 655 doesn't work for you. If the DIr-624 works well for you then ya, go for it. Just know that you'll only have the G band and no N modes for wireless, if this is ok for you then go for it. Should be good for you.
We could like to know if the 655 works at your sisters place and what modem she has on her system. Do you and her have the same ISP service? I wonder if maybe changing the ISP modem out thats the same as your sisters would be good too. If you want to keep the 655.
Please let us know what your sister has for a modem and if she has the same ISP.
-
Just phone my sister....she has a speedtream 4200 modem and the same isp provider as mine...
I would like to keep my possibilities open and keep the dir 655 but I'm getting desperate about finding the solution to my problem...
-
Well if the 655 worked on her modem and doesn't work well on yours. I would ask the ISP if you can get the same modem has hers and give the 655 another try. Just sounds like this could be a ISP speedstream 5100 and the 655 not liking each other well for some reason.
Were kind of at the end of options now that I've looked at your modem and router. The router is set up as best as it can be. I would ask about the 4200 DSL modem and see. It's worth a try.
Let us know what happens.
-
I'll give you updates tomorrow...I'll switch modem with her and see if it works at my placewith the dir 655...
Bye for now...it's 6 pm supper time...
-
by the way my internet connection never disconnected with the air plus xtreme...and i've been on for almost an hour playing a film and chatting with you guys....
-
Ok. Dinner time too here.
-
Changed the modem ...same type (Sagemcom 4300) but the technician of my ISP tells me it contains a new firmware ... been testing ever since and everything's working top notch....
Were suppose to bring it in last Friday but got it this afternoon... explains why I didn,t get it touch sooner..
thanks again for all the help and yes there was a solution for that problem...after all....
any questions I'll be glad to answer...bye for now
-
Glad you got a new modem and it's working. Keep us posted.
