Title: Networking Failing on DNS-321
Post by: Jim Padgett on December 19, 2011, 06:05:02 AM
I had the intermittent dropping off the network 1 1/2 years ago until I fixed the IP address and entered the settings in my hosts file..
No issues till now...
NAS does't want to talk anymore  even using the utility ..  the nas shows up with it's proper IP configs, but it just will not connect to any browser to set the configurations.

I get emails about the disk checks being done with no issues.. I just can't get it to show up on my browser or network.

For troubleshooting purposes, although your NAS seems to be connected, try swapping out the Ethernet cable for one you know is working properly and try changing network ports.

You can always flash the DNS-321 back to the factory defaults, which will reset all of your user settings, but should not impact your HDD configuration or data.

I reset to factory defaults..  re-entered my configs...

I can open a dos prompt and do a dir of my nas volume_2 .. it will work..

2 minutes later try the same dir agian and get the specified network name is no longer valid..

Then 30 seconds later do it again and it works..

Did you try accessing the DNS-321 from another PC or have all your troubleshooting steps using the same PC?

In the event that this is a true hardware failure, here is a sticky post containing several options for 100% data recovery using (free and for-pay) third party applications: ShareCenter Data Recovery (Windows PCs) (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41306.0)

I will make an image of one of the drives... then migrate data back to a new NAS ..

I wouldn't give up on the DNS-321 quite yet. Can't hurt to try another PC.
..I wonder if the NAS NIC was somehow damaged.

Please post your results and let us know how things turn out.

It seems that I lost power and all my reserved IP addresses got hosed... so my logitech revue was using an IP address that was reserved for the NAS. This was causing major DNS issues with my router ... and the NAS was very intermittent about being talked to....

Oh well.. I have a Synology 211J already on it's way...

I'm glad your data is safe and have a backup strategy in place.
