My 655 has worked well for several years. I bought it when it first came out. Lately it has been dropping a few of the 8-10 wireless connections at random which all seem to be within 190-199. I reserved these PCs by their MAC address but they are still being dropped for some reason. I'm about to replace the router if it can't be resolved. Have to cycle power to the router to reconnect as repairing the connection within the PCs has no effect.
firmware-1.04 mixed G&N WPA-TKIP
What kind of problems could cause specific computers to be dropped daily?

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

as mentioned I've set it up for mixed G&N with WPA-TKIP, running firmware 1.04. What does unchecking GI short & extra wireless protection do? There are cordless phones at 2.4GHz but I can't recall them being used at the time the connection is dropped. I've used InSSIDer and can see one other wireless router as well as several secured routers in XP's network window. How can I tell if there is interference?
-
the funny thing is, it only seems to drop the N connected devices, the G continues to stay connected.

It's possible that other WiFi near by can have interference impact on the same frequncy. InSSIDer will tell you what modes and channels others are using. Are they using the same Mode and Channels as yours? How many other wifi routers are near by?
Cordless phone can also interfere with the router being on or near the same frequency.
I wold do this, turn off all wireless and cordless devices. Unplug cordless if you need to. Set the N mode only on the router and test with one device on N mode only. Then graduate adding devices and see if how the router handles.
Turn off Short GI as it's not needed and makes the connection on N mode a bit slower.
Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer. (http://www.teamviewer.com)

Use channel 1 or channel 11. Dir-655 A1 can use US 1.21 or UK A1 1.31 firmware. I use UK 1.31EU for my US A4 Dir-655. It works better than the US firmware on my US dir-655.

Lets try channels too however this see if we can figure out N mode with out trying FW updates and lets keep the FW updates to NA on NA units and EU on EU units as they do have different coding. This maybe an NA unit their dealing with.

Living in NA, I assume this A2 unit is a NA? Can't really tell. I made the changes as suggested and switch to channel 1 just for fun. So far so good! Thanks for the quick replies btw. :)
And what makes you think I'm a he?
I seem to recall having done a firmware upgrade some time ago with disasterous results and had to revert back to the original firmware. I could be wrong though, my memory of it is a little fuzzy as it was a few years ago!

Ok, keep us posted on how it goes. A2 is an NA unit. If anything we can walk you thru a proper FW update.
