Title: efficient manner to move large folders around?
Post by: krisdecker on February 28, 2009, 10:12:45 AM
Hi there!

Is there a command prompt interface on the 321?  I would rather do a 'mv' than drag and drop on long files..

I did a complete Vista backup to the 321 (took overnight!!! do I need to enable large frames??)... I decided to restructure the directories, and the file move is estimating 22 hours to complete (!)

I think this folder is probably around 100-200 gig--should be slow, but I am wondering if it is downloading to my computer, then copying back up to the new location on the 321....

No - as shipped by D-Link there is no CLI on the DNS-321.

Since you are moving the files around with Windows explorer, then yes, they are being transferred to your computer and then back to the DNS-321.

Large frames - I assume you mean jumbo frame - you don't mention anything about your network, but for jumbo frame to work you have to have gigabit ethernet and the network switch and the computer at the other end of the transfer will need to support jumbo frame.

With jumbo frame you could see as much as 50% increase in throughput - but you are only likely to see this onlarge files, if you're transferring a few thousand smaller files, it's unlikely to have a signficant improvement.

thanks for the info!  that is most unfortunate about the copy mechanism... I will have to sure I have my backups in the right place before I initiate them next time  :-\
