Title: Help with FTP

I recently purchased a DNS-321 and have setup an account with dlinkddns.com for a dynamic dns server and have set-up both my nas and my dir-655 to the ddns server but don't know how to access the ftp server from the web.

p.s. my 321's firmware is 1.01 and my dir-655's is 1.21

First I would suggest that you only have one device updating the DDNS server - preferably the router.

Next - get the ftp server set up and tested using local access - ie. from the local network ...

Step by step

1) Set the DNS-321 for a static ip address, make sure to enter a gateway address.
2) Create the user
3) Create the folder
4) Give the user access to the folder
5) Start the ftp server
6) Test using local access.

If there is a problem at this stage, fix it before moving on - once local access works

7) At the router - forward port 21 to the static address of the DNS-321
8) Test from outside the network.

For the test in #8, you might want to make a note of the router's WAN or public ip address and try that if access using the DNS name does not work and, depending on the ftp client you are using, it may be necessary to configure for active ftp.

What would be the "website" address for local and outside?
I got local to work with ftp://192.168.1.2 (static IP of DNS)
What would outside look like?
I tried ftp://"WAN IP" but I get a page that appears to be searching for a while then gives me a message. "Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure its typed correctly and permissions blah blah. The connection with the server was reset."

I'm not only just looking for the ftp:// address, but http:// if thats possible. I want to be able to give the address out to my family/friends.

First - there is no website (other than the admin interface) unless you create one - and that is a lot easier said than done - you'll need to teach family/friends to use ftp.

Next - assuming that you have ftp working on the local LAN, and forwarded port 21 to the local address (step 7 in my mini tutorial above), you should have no difficulty in accessing the ftp server from outside the LAN - don't try to access by WAN ip from inside the same LAN, it may or may not work depending on the router you are using.
