Title: Router Locking Up and Not Responding
Post by: dab on December 27, 2011, 11:01:50 PM
I've got this router hoping to have it work, however it doesn't. Periodically it will lock up. Current connections (IRC) works, however anything new that requires DNS look ups fails (Not sure if direct IP connections works. I can't even admin into the panel. It provides my some "connection timed out" message.

I'm rocking the DGL-4500 XTREME N GAMING ROUTER

Running Firmware Version :1.21NA,  2009/07/09

http://pastebin.com/bbaHmFmP

There is the log. I've *SNIP*'d my IP to keep any more port scanners. D:

You think upgrading to 1.23 NA will alleviate the issue? I'm honestly not sure what it is. But the only fix currently is to unplug the router and plug it back in. (Not the greatest fix since I gotta reconnect to IRC and all that).

Anywho, any suggestions are helpful!

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Has been cases of v1.21NA locking or hanging routers. Some don't. Lets try some trouble shooting, then if you still exhibit hangs, by all means, follow the FW Update sticky please.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer. (http://www.teamviewer.com)

Thanks for the response!

I've applied those setting changes, we'll see if it does anything different (Should only take ~ 30 hours to check).

The hardware version is A2.
I have Comcast Cable for ISP.
I'm rocking the Motorola SURFboard eXtreme Cable Modem (http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Consumer-Product-and-Services/Cable-Modems-and-Gateways/SURFboard-Cable-Modem-SB6120-US-EN)
It is a stand alone modem.

Using Mixed ngb

I'm are using (AUTO) WPA OR WPA2 security. There is 1 macbook pro, 3 windows laptops and 1 windows desktop, all wireless. There is also a lg bluray player connecting  via wired.

Thanks for the assistance so far :)

I am/was having this same issue, I updated the firmware to 1.23NA on Monday and I will let you know if it fixed this lock up issue too.  Mine would lock up 1-2 weeks so I will need more time to know if I am in the clear.

So I noticed it locked up for a bit, but seemed to unlockup (Is that even a word?). Which is definitely a positive direction. We'll see if the problem gets any worse but seems to pretty much had been fixed...

If you see it again, I would update to v1.23 using the FW update sticky process in the forum. Keep us posted.

ok so it kept happening, and fixing itself, so I've upgraded to the latest firmware and I'll keep you updated.

Thanks for all the help so far! I probably would have just tried and return the router if I didn't think about proper settings/forum. :P

Mine has been running strong with no lock ups, it has been 8 days since the FW upgrade.  So far so good, knock on wood...

Good to hear XS. Be sure to save the routers configuration to file after the update.  ;)

Update:
Well it has been over 4 weeks since upgrading from 1.21NA to 1.23NA (A2) and there has been NO lock ups.  I think the wireless also works better with our smart phone too but that could be coincedence.  Anyway the only thing I see in the FW notes that may have resolved this issue, is the fix on the WAN slowdown in version 1.22 but hard telling not knowing.

Anyway FW 1.23NA seems the way to go if having lock up issues.

Ya there were some people experiencing v1.21 lock ups, I know I did when i had it on my A1. I have an A2 now and it doesn't exhibit this with v1.21 that came loaded with it. I think it was kind of sporadic with users. Any how, v1.22 and v1.23 do fix this. My A1 is still running v1.22 at the moment.  ;D
