Title: Speed: MAC Adress validation vs. WEP vs. WPA/WPA2

The fastest is, of course, running without any security messures at all.
But what is the fastest from these:
- MAC Address Validation
- WEP
- WPA/WPA2

I could test it.....but it is easier to ask the experts  ;D

Don't look at it as determing what is the fastest but what provides more bandwidth. Since speed is a relitive term.

WEP should never be used now. It is less secure and has very high overhead. You will always have to sacrifice security or performance. You decide.

MAC address filtering along with a hidden SSID is security through obscurity.

WPA2 is much more secure.

Of course having it wide open will provide you with more bandwidth.

You will not notice any speed degradation with normal web traffic. WPA/2 and WEP do have some effect on streaming video since that requires more stable bandwidth and decoding the data does take some time (ms)

Just tested a little bit.....and Eddie your right....WPA has a great impact om streaming video
Just tried via a DreamBox 800 - with WPA the streaming is stuttering...

I´ll try with MAC filtering

What you can do is set guest ssid unencrypted for video steaming but don't know how that would affect the performance of the dliks CPU. Since now it has to handle both unencrypted and encrypted traffic. And check off the option that allows the two to communicat with each other then added security by Mac filtering for the guest zone

I also feel compelled to add that MAC filtering and SSID hiding are not valid security methods.  It takes less time to get around than WEP.  And all your data is unencrypted in the meantime.

Use WPA2 or go unencrypted, but with a full understanding of the risks.

Well, that ois true. But with one remark: Only WPA2 protects against serious hacker guys. MAC filtering does protect against non-hacking people using your AP as a free hotspot to download (sometimes) illegal stuff. Compare it to a locked door (WPA2) a closed door but not locked door (MAC filtering) and a wide open door (no security at all)  ;)
