Title: New DIR-645: Setup doesn’t work
Post by: rasmasyean on January 05, 2012, 04:38:47 AM
OK, I got a new DIR-645 from Newegg.

The internet works and I can get through from my LAN computer to the internet.

I tried to run that CD and it just hangs when it tries to configure the router and then tells me to check my connections, etc.

I tried the 192.168.0.1 way and it sometimes hangs as well, but when I CAN get to the setup page, I get to the “STEP 4: CONFIGURE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION”, which just keeps cycling that bar for like ever…

So I click the “Next” button and choose “DHCP Connection” (I have a cable modem).

It brings me to the page with “MAC Address” and “Host Name” fields.  But it doesn’t matter what I enter because clicking “Next” does absolutely nothing at all.  No load, no nothing.  It’s like that’s a dummy button. In the manual, page 15, that page has a “DNS Settings” section with fields “Primary DNS Address” and “Secondary DNS Address”.  But not mine. My page says Hardware Version: A1, Firmware Version: 1.00 if that matters. I tried both IE9 and FF and I get the same thing.  That page doesn’t do anything.

I tried to stick a toothpick in the bottom several times to reset the router but it doesn’t help.

Please help.

DHCP connection is generally used for cable modems.
If your getting Internet then theres no need to use the CD.

If using IE 8 or 9, try setting the compatibility mode and test.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer. (http://www.teamviewer.com)

There is some beta FW too that maybe we can try.

OK, I got it to work by connecting it to a different desktop.  Now I’m not sure if this has anything to do with it but the one that worked was a Windows 7 desktop.  The one that doesn’t work is Windows Vista.

What is really strange is that even though the Vista machine can connect to the internet, it sometimes hangs on the 192.168.0.1 page.  Furthurmore, some router page buttons don’t work. It’s as if it’s not running the “javascript” (or whatever code D-Link programmers used) in the button.  Once I set up the router with the 7 computer, I get the LOGIN page on the Vista computer (if it doesn’t hang)…but the “Login” button doesn’t do anything on the Vista computer!  :D Just like that “Next” button on the MAC address/Host Name setting page.

Now what totally threw me off is yet another problem I can’t explain.  Some internet sites don’t load and some do. For example, http://www.wirelessforums.org/ http://www.ebay.com/ don’t work on the Vista computer.

I rebooted my computer and even connected my old router (DGL-4300) and the Vista computer works perfectly with my old router, but not the DIR-645.

P.S. I tried the compatability view button as well but it doesn’t do anything.  Nor does FF.

Any 3rd party security programs on the Vista PC, disable temporarily to test. Also disable windows firewall too.

Are the network card drivers up to date for Vista?

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What network drivers on Vista?  I installed motherboard drivers. You mean look for "generic network drivers" from Microsoft and try to install that?

Nothing seems to work so far...  :(

Any 3rd party security programs on the Vista PC, disable temporarily to test. Also disable windows firewall too.
Disabled Windows FW and MS Security Essentials. They are both red now.

Are the network card drivers up to date for Vista?
Updated RealTek Lan drivers from ASUS website.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
It was blank.  I copied the Device Info IP’s into it.

Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
QoS on DIR is default OFF. GameFuel on DGL was turned ON a couple of months ago for an application, but it was never used for years before that and there was no problem with the old router with Vista computer.  Frankly, I didn’t really notice a difference in “gaming”.

Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
No option found.  I presume this is in the beta you're refering to.

Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Default ON.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
I set it up for the Vista computer (192.168.0.2), but do you mean that I might have to set it up for every wireless device that ever connects to the router?

Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
“IP V 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties” has the auto IP and auto DNS radio button’s selected.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Did this.

I also found that NewEgg.com doesn't load.  Is there something in common about these sites that may cause it to hang I wonder.  Do they have anything in common with the setup pages on the DIR-645?

Is the Vista PC wired or wireless to the 645?
The 2nd PC is worked right? How is it connecting?

Ensure both PCs are set up for Auto Obtain under there networking properties.

If wireless:
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Try turning off security for Wifi temporarily and test. The back on. Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

On the Vista computer have you tried another browswer? If the results are the same it's not at the browser level. On the DIR-645 under setup/parental control set and ensure it's on none. It usually won't cause issues however in this case there is a slight possibility that this may be the case. Also be sure to reset all IE settings to default.

MTU under setup/manual configure could be a culprit as well but "normally" affect all computers with the same symptom.

Definitely either reflash or update the firmware to 1.02.

Before you update, please read the FW update sticky please. Keep us posted on what you find before though.

Both the PC’s are wired via 1 Gb CAT6 Ethernet.

I tried IE9 and FF.

I never set any parental controls and I just got the router and never changed anything (I even reset it a couple of times) other than trying the above, which didn’t fix the Vista PC.  Wouldn’t parental controls also affect everyone?  And wouldn’t it give you a message rather than hang?

I found that it doesn’t connect to battle.net using Starcraft as well.

I’m gonna try to get a hold of another PC to connect to it and see what happens.

Keep us posted.
Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.com

If after that, might update to the beta FW. If that doesn't resolve the issue, might have a defective router on your hands.

OK, so I tried it on other computers’ Ethernet port and it worked.  I was able to LOGIN to the router and poke around without any problems when using:
Another Windows Vista Desktop
Windows 7 laptop
Windows XP Netbook
Windows 7 Netbook

I even found an IE 8 among them to try.

And the original desktop still doesn’t work when I plugged the DIR-645<--->DGL-4300(changed to 192.168.0.50)<--->Vista Computer.  I just thought I’d try this to see if the link is “cleaned up” by having a middle-man.  It still doesn’t let me log in as if the “Login” button doesn’t do anything.  So I guess it’s safe to say that there’s a problem with my original computer…at least regarding compatability with the DIR-645.

Is it possible that my computer/network card is operating on some “updated (or not)” TCP/IP or Ethernet protocol?  …where the DIR-645 does not recognize?

OK, I have a new development again.  :P

I connected a wireless dongle to the problem desktop and lo and behold!  It works!  I can browse the DIR-645 setup pages. Ebay, newegg, wireless forums, battle.net ALL work!   :D

I guess that narrows it down to the ethernet.

Any suggestions?  :-[

. . .

. . .

Was this just a typo, the latest firmware I see available for the 645 is 1.01, is there a newer 1.02 version available someplace?

Update drivers for that NIC on the original pc or install a new or different model NIC.

OK, it finally worked after I went to Device Manager / Network Manager / Update Drive Software.

First time Microsoft drivers worked over the manufacturer's drivers.  :p

What's with that?  I don't get it.  Why did this bug appear on the DIR-645 and never appeared before?  Was there some type of IEEE protocal update that ASUS did not keep up with?  Or perhaps they kept up with it but broke something else with their driver release that only affected newer devices (on Vista)?   ???

Anyway's thanks for all the help everyone provided.  For the record, this is my motherboard.  The problem area was the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.
