I plan to insert my Seagate Barracuda LP (ST32000542AS, 5900 RPM) to DNS 320 as the first Hard disk. I will purchased another hard disk later to build a Raid 1 (Mirror).
I have 2 questions:
1. Does 7200 RPM hard disk will increase the file transfer performance? I do not know where is the performance bottleneck. I plan to use RAID 1. If 2X7200RPM hard disks (RAID 1) has no much difference with 2 5900RPM hard disks, then I would purchase another 5900 RPM hard disk.
2. For the 1st hard disk of RAID 1, I should put it Standard? then when I get another one later, I could put both in RAID 1 without damaging my exist data on the 1st hard disk, right?

Although ethernet connection is 1Gb the maximum throughput is 200-240Mb (30MB/s max), so the answer is NO, no matter how fast is your disk you will not get better performance

Yes, you can convert a single HDD configured as a "Standard Volume" to RAID 1 (when you purchase your second HDD) without data loss.

Agreed and I would advice going for 5400RPM or "green" drive as temperature in the NAS tend to get pretty warm.

Thank you so much for your reply.

No problem. ;)
Please post back and share your experience when you add your second HDD and convert to RAID 1.
. . . And remember that RAID-1 provides redundancy, but is not a substitute for a second physical backup of your data.
