Title: Remote Desktop Will Not Connect via DIR-825 over LAN
Post by: cfog83 on January 10, 2012, 12:27:18 PM
Apologies if this has already been covered on this board, but I could not find a thread with the same problem.  I am attempting to set up a remote desktop connection to my home media server so I no longer need to keep a keyboard, mouse, and monitor plugged in to it when I need to use it.  I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on both systems.  I am sure the firewall is not the problem, as I have tried to connect with it disabled.  I have also made sure to allow remote connections on the server.  I know the DIR-825 supports UPnP, which works with Remote Desktop, so there should be no problem, but something is not working.  I have tried disabling UPnP, setting up a virtual server, port forwarding, and assigning a permanant IP to the server, to no effect.  Something is blocking my remote connection requests.  Keep in mind, I am not even trying to do this over the internet, just over my LAN!  I am at my wits end here.  Tried all sorts of online guides, nothing has worked.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

I have RDP set on on several of my PCs at home and connect RDP using the IP address of the PC i'm trying to connect too. It should work

Remote desktop over a LAN never goes thorough the Internet access router / gateway.

You normally would Remote Desktop "access" the server's local IP (ex: 192.168.1.200) or the Windows "name" of the server (ex: Myhomesrv)

smlunatick, I know that RD accesses the other network computer over the LAN.  That is why this is so frustrating.  I type the local IP address of my server into the RD box and it fails to connect.  I can even see the server on my network map, but when I choose to "Connect With Remote Desktop Connection" I can't connect.

FurryNutz, I tried what you said, to no avail.  Could my router be broken?  It seems to work fine in absolutely every other way.

Thank you for your responses.

Does this "remote" computer have a firewall software / anti-virus that could block access.
