Title: Bandwidth allocation
Post by: steq184 on March 06, 2009, 10:10:54 AM
On my network I have a wireless/ethernet laptop, wireless pc, wireless laptop and an thernet Xbox360.
The trouble I have is that when my son goes on the Xbox the rest of the network goes sooooo slow.
Is there a way that I can give the Xbox less bandwidth and if so how do I do this please.

You can use QoS and/or Wish to prioritize IP's/ports. You can have a look/search on the board for tips how to use it.
The 655 does not have bandwidth management features that can allocate a given bandwidth to an IP.

Under Advanced - QOS I have the following turned on:

Enable Traffic Shaping
Automatic Uplink Speed
Enable QoS Engine
Automatic Classification
Dynamic Fragmentation

And never have problems with any one network device hogging all the bandwidth. I have a XBox 360, PSP, and two computers that all share the network. Even when I'm downloading large files and reinstalling games from Steam my wife never has problems surfing or playing Everquest 2.

Can the XBOX really be consuming so much bandwidth that its slowing down the internet?  This seems unlikely to me but I don't know.  (So, assuming that it is NOT a bandwidth issue ...

This suggests to me that its not really a bandwidth issue but more of an issue that involves the xbox somehow either slowing down the router or causing other clients to have trouble talking to it.

I would monitor the logs when the XBOX is in use and performance is crappy.  And check for the number of error packets.

i've never had problems.

If he's playing online, it could, as well if he's got downloads running in the background. This will also be noticed if you don't have high speed internet. I have a 6Mbit connection and all is fine.
