Title: Installing 1 drive now, then 2nd later in RAID1
Post by: csilvest on January 17, 2012, 08:36:44 PM
I recently purchased a DNS-325 without drives.  Bad timing given the recent price increases on hard drives.  To ease the pain, I would like to put a single 2TB drive in now (specifically, a WD20EARX 2TB Caviar Green SATA3 Intelli Power 64MB Cache) and then add a 2nd one later.  I want them to be in RAID1.  My questions:

1. When I add the 2nd drive, will I be able to have the 2nd drive easily duplicate the 1st drive?  Or will I be forced to backup, reformat in RAID1, and then restore?

2. How identical do the two drives in RAID1 have to be?  I worry that I might not be able to get the exact same model in a few months time.

Any help is appreciated!
