I am trying to connect to a D-Link DIR655 using a Apple G4 PowerBook equipped with an Apple Original Airport Card (802.11b) to detect WIFi signals. Trying to connect to an unsecured signal at a local Library, the computer states that there is an error connecting to the network. The Library IT checked the settings on the router and it strates the 802.11b is enabled, still there is no connection. Is there a complatibility issue witth the Orinal Airport card and the D-Link Router?

What security modes is the router set up for. Need to check with the Mfr of the Apple Card and see that modes they support. Might be WEP only. If the router is set for WPA then the card won't connect unless the router is set for WEP. Most routers and devices now days use WPA wish is preferred. Routers can only do one security mode at a time, not both. WPA or WEP. If the routers security mode is temporarily turned off and B mode is set up on the router, see if the card will connect. Try WEP if they will do that for you to test.
I would see if there is a Mac USB wifi adaptor available that supports newer WPA modes and wifi modes like G and N.

The DIR-655 is located in a local Library. Sccess is Open and Unsecured. I do not see what Security Mode of WPA or WEP has to do with this. The Airport Card recognizes the network but when I attempt to access it, the computer responds with "An error has been detected in the Airport Library Network. Apple Discussion Group has exhausted all their resources

well if the WiFi is unsecured, what modes is the router running? If the router isn't running B mode or a mixed that includes B , then your probably need to upgrade the wireless on the Mac.

The Library IT worked with me last week and checked to see if the option was set to accept 802.11b and it was. I do not have any other problems in Libraries that do not have D Link routers. Just the two Libraries that I would consider local or close. Both routers were added last year when the routers the Librarie's had needed to be replaced.

There any Mac wireless adapter upgrades for your Mac? I would recommend upgrading.
Carry a USB adapter if there is one for Macs. There small and easy to use.
