Any possibility to get VPN features in a firmware update
-
VPN as in? Most VPN are handled by 3rd partys or at the sources like work places and such. VPN is working for my roommate who VPNs in to his work when he needs to.
-
well here is the deal i use a vpn and i got 2 computers if i have the vpn enabled on one the other cant use it so if the router had vpn feature that would mean that both would be behind vpn instead of just one at a time
-
Thats not a router function, the router does manage the traffice however it should be allowing both computers to connect to VPNs. Are the computers connecting to the same VPN or different?
-
same account, seems that business models of dlink routers has the option to hookup vpn via router so that the router handles the connection like http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=564 so it shouldn't be impossible
-
That router is probably specifically designed for VPN. The 657 is probably only designed for general use and one VPN connection. If one computer is working and you can't connect with another, might only allow one VPN connection. I don't know. I only have one user the VPN here. I would call DLink and ask if this router can handle more that one VPN connection. Thats a valid question for sure.
-
Still 1 vpn connection is all i need so a vpn client in the router would be ideal for me
-
Well, anything is possible however you might have to find a router that has the feature already designed for it. This model probably wont see any features like that added. You could ask D-Link and see. Many variables and marketing and research go into each model and each one has specific features for each.
-
Doesnt dlink check these forums from time to time ? or is this forum just a waste of time ?
-
They keep an eye out. Mostly for critical issues with products. I don't think these forums are a waste of time. Alot of issues with current products get resolved here. I think others will agree. Were here to help other with current problems and set up help. Ya we can make requests and asks for features to be added. It's up to D-Link to take that information back and use it or not. I would suggest that if your not happy or satisfied with your current router, that you find something that does. There are other models out there that might be better suited for you needs.
-
well probably but i dont wanna spend money just because i got it rather request features here or fix a workable solution that doesn't require $ rather spend cash of other things then hardware for a network.
-
Good luck.

The DIR-657 supports VPN passthrough. So in other words a VPN client behind the router can connect to their corporate network with ease. This also includes multiple outbound VPN connections using PPTP and IPSEC. Now if you are connecting to the same location, this can create issues. Connecting more than 1 VPN connection to the same endpoint + same user account is even more unlikely to work properly. Most VPN endpoints either do not accept more than 1 connection from the same origin and some will not accept more than one concurrent user with the same credentials. Both outside of the scope of the router.
What you could do is if your employer allows you to create a site to site IPSEC tunnel with them, you could purchase a VPN router and create a 24/7 connection. This would allow more than one computer to the corporate intranet without issues. This of course requires them to be on board with such a proposition.
If you were connecting 2 VPN connections to two different endpoints (2 different companies for example), the DIR-657 should have no issues whatsoever. Just make sure the IPSec and PPTP ALG's are checked under firewall settings on the router. They are already enabled by default.

Been awhile, but my IT guy at the time recomended a business class router which I purchased(it's now in the pile at home, too slow for today!). I could either use my desktop or my laptop, but not both because I only had 1 VPN account login. But like Doctor Doom said above, it was one computer or the other, I just used pass through and used the endpoint we installed in Windoz. I think the OP needs a router with a built in endpoint for what he wants to do. It is also safe to say I worked directly for the president of the company and had his blessings too.
