my drives are still really really hot all the time - even when the computer has been turned off for quite a while - can you help with 2 quick questions please as there seems to be constant activity on the drives - even when all the devices that have a connection to it are turned off

1. What does the Upnp Av server actually do - I use a Netgear EVA8000 and a Sonos system to access the video and music files on the DNS323 - do I need to have the UPNP server activated to allow this?

2. It seems lots of people have had success using the 1.05 firmware - how can I roll back from my current 1.06 version - Im worried that the constant heat is going to fry the HDDs - it already means the DNS323 is shutting down sporadically - I presume as it is getting so hot.  I currently have 2 x 1TB drives in there - so dont need the extra capacity allowances for 1.06 - but I just cant risk frying the disks and losing all my hard backup/ripping  work!!!

sorry - have just noticed a post about a different version of v.1.06 on the french website - 1.06b60 - can i use this firmware perhaps -

What temps are you getting with the NAS?

Is the NAS shutting off on you?

49deg - and yes - it does shut down every few days.....

49c seems high, what is your room temp like?

right now I am at 44c/111F but my room temp is at 27c/81F

room is not too hot - but its the constant activity that it perplexing me - it just bever spins down...the network light constantly blinks and the drive lights flicker every so often - but nothing is accessing the drives...

have you tried unplugging the network cable to make sure nothing is accessing the drives?  if not, i would try that and then plug the cable in and check the temp after a few hours and see if it drops at all

i rolled back to 1.05 last night - this morning -t he drive was cool to the touch (a good sign) and the disks had spun down - however, the fan was still on....
my final question is - what is the UPnp server - as I mentioned in the original post, I use my DNS323 to store all my media files - which I then access via laptop, Netgear EVA8000 and SOnos system.  I have disable the UPnp server and the Sonos and EVA8000 still work fine in that they can access all the stored media files...what, in simpl;e terms does the Upnp server add to the party and can I live without it??

streaming media. If you arent streaming your video, music and pictures to a ps3, xbox or computer there is no need for it on your machine.

thanks for replying - Im still unsure of the terminology - I thought i was "streaming" to my Netgear, Sonos and laptop....am I not??

Sorry to pose such a basic question - as I mentioned, the various devices (not tried laptop yet) do seem to be able to play media files stores on the DNS323 - is there a difference between this and "streaming"
