i have run test port after test port after test port but nothing opens...
all ping tests show no pings lost ever....
information...
Xfinity modem model # SMCD3GNV
DGL-4500 Router
Direct connection to router
anyone help?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
-
Is this your Modem (http://www.smc.com/files/AX/SMCD3GNVFeatureSheet.pdf)?
-
Firmware version: 1.15
Hardware version: A2
Cable Xfinity comcast
Built in wifi router version SMCD3GNV
-
Yes
-
Looks like this modem is a gateway. Do you have phone service with the ISP aswell?
I don't think this modem can be bridged.
Any chance you can get into the modems web page and see if it has DMZ? If you can and it does have a DMZ, you need to put the IP address the 4500 gets on the WAN side, found under Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, put this address into the modems DMZ. Then set up port forwarding and ports should be open. Your dealing with a Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm) issue here.
Access Modems Web Page. (http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/internet/wireless-gateway-setup/)
If you need additional help, Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer. (http://www.teamviewer.com)

I will see what can be done and get back to you if more problems occur.
thank you for the help

Access from the left navigation modem menu:
Advanced > DMZ
Modem User Guide. (http://media2.comcast.net/anon.comcastonline2/support/userguides/Wireless_Gateway_User_Guide_030811.pdf)
Keep us posted.
-
Okay i am connected to the modem and i have enabled portforwarding and triggering and i am at the DMZ and do not know what to do
-
You don't need to enable port forwarding on the Modem. Just input the IP address you see on the 4500 under Status/Device Info/Wan Section. Is there a 192 or a 10 something for the WAN IP address?
-
i have a 10.0.0.3 as the address to the 4500
-
Extra INFO
the 4500 address 10.0.0.3 DHCP
there is an option to make it static should i do that?
-
Ok,
So this is what I would do, reserve that IP address on the modem so it doesn't change.
Access from the left navigation menu:
Connected Devices > Computers
To manually add a computer with a static IP address to your wireless network:
1. Under Online Computers, click Add Computer with Static IP. The Add Computer menu appears.
2. Complete the following fields in the Add Computer menu:
Option Description
Host Name Host name of the computer you want to add
Connection Read-only field that displays the network connection of Ethernet
MAC Address MAC address of the computer you want to add (use a colon between each 2
character ID in the MAC address)
Static Address Static IP address of the computer you want to add (use a period between
each octet in the IP address)
Comments Optional comments about the computer
3. Click SAVE to save your settings (or click CANCEL to discard them). If you click SAVE, the Computer
menu reappears with the computer you added displayed under Offline Computers.
4. To add more computers with static IP addresses, repeat steps 1 through 3.
5. To edit an online computer, click the EDIT button next to the computer you want to modify, edit the
settings on the Edit Computer menu and click SAVE.
6. To delete an online or offline computer, click X next to the computer. When the Delete Computer message
appears, click OK to delete the computer or CANCEL to retain it. If you click OK, the computer will be
removed from the Computers menu.
Then input that IP address into the DMZ on the modem. Save settings. I would reboot the modem and 4500 after the changes are saved.

Got 4500 on to Modems DMZ. Need to get Mine Craft Server configured now.

Is port triggering safe to use under application rules?
-
I would presume it's as safe as any other feature. Just need to figure out what is needed for it to be used is all. I would not recommend it for gaming. I would presume that PT might not have the performance capabilities to keep up with that kind of operation. I presume that applications that only need some form of intermittent connection would PT be a good option. I haven't used it much if at all. QoS seems to handle my needs. ;D
-
Thanks for the reply Fur, the reason I was wondering because I decided to try out port triggering for my two Xbox's on ports 3074 (both) and port 88UDP the other day.
I only have been able to get a few games in so far and I have to say those games have been some of the best connection games I have edxperienced in MW3. My son has alos noticed a difference for the better. However it is too soon to tell and could be coincedence. Anyway I just don't want to leave my self opened to get hacked.
-
Let us know how that does. Might be a good alternative to test out for xbox. Game consoles aren't generally known for getting hacked. It's the accounts that get hacked. >:( I had mine hacked last year. >:(
-
Ugh, no good man! I hate hackers. Anyway, if what I read how port triggering works on multiple consoles is that you have to open the ports listed for everything on your network since there is no entry for a specific IP address under "special applications". Does this sound correct?
FYI, I am still using game fuel too.
-
Yes thats right. Maybe you can post a screen capture of how you have that set up? ::)
-
Yeah no problem but it may be awhile to get the screen shot, I am at work.
Anyway here are the links that got me thinking and how to do it.
http://www.pcwintech.com/node/681 (http://www.pcwintech.com/node/681)
And this post but I kept your settings for game fuel and only added ports 3074 and 88 since from what I have read the other ports do not need any type of port forwading/triggering.
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=713469 (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=713469)
Anyway, just trying new things out. I have never had any NAT issues what so ever with this router, I am just tired of lagging in MW3. :D
-
I know and even though we can try to eliminate as much lag on these routers, there will always be some form of LAG as others we play with are probably not generally setting up there routers or doing any tweeking to make sure they are working well as we do.
I would like or you to test with out port 88. Thats not a high bandwidth or high priority port and is only intermittently used. Just 3074 seems to be the most important one. Let us know what the results are. I'll give this a try this weekend and see.
-
Will do man, Yeah I think port 88 is only for voice however MS recommends you forward this port if you are having NAT issues and my NAT is always open.
Hopefully I will be able to get some game time in this weekend to know for sure. I am sure my son will so I could always ask him if he still notices a difference.
-
WE should SIR. ::)
-
Okay, sorry for the delay, but here are the screen shots. I also added my screen shot of Game fuel since I have been playing around with priority settings too, since I thought priority 1 was too high so I went back to Furry original settings (close to).
Furry, have you tried out port triggering yet? If so any feedback? Do you or anyone else know what port 53 (DNS) is used for?
Anyway, I definitely notice a difference since making these changes with lag and hit detection, even my son noticed it and said "Dad, I don't know why am I doing so good lately." lol.
Both of our KDR has gone up slightly in TDM over the weekend so I happy with the results so far. ;D

Can everyone see the screenshots? If not let me know.
-
I did get a chance to test it out for one night. Not sure if I saw any changes and however conditions that night seemed laggy, possibly due to other users. I noticed at one point I had one red bar in MW3. :o then it all came back. I haven't had a chance to continue as I've changed routers for testing. ::) I'll come back to this though and let you know as I do want to see if PT will help out more. If so then we'll update the sticky. ;D
-
Hmm, I may have spoke to soon about PT, I decided to pull actual real data using the COD Elite website. I know its not 100% accurate but at least its something. I could only go back to 1/31 and I turned on PT on 2/1.
Anyway, I pulled my sons and my combat record and compared stats pre and post PT. His KDR went up +.073 and mine actually went down -.061.
I am thinking the improvement I saw has more to do with the changes I made to the Gamefuel rules. I added ports 88 and 80 to the list, changed port 3074 priority from a 1 to 30 and port 53 from a 1 to 40.
I made these changes to GF a day or two before enabling port triggering so I may have confused the two.
Anyway, just wanted to share more accurate feedback and I think I may disable port triggering and see there are any changes in game play. This time I will be more diligent on actual data instead of going off of feelings.
-
Keep us posted. I would also test with out 80 and 88 as well. Those ports aren't used much, only when dashboard is accessing general internet stuff and 88 is authentication by the games only during initial run of the game then thats it.
-
You mean remove port 80 and 88 from the game fuel rules and just keep ports 53 and 3074?
I only have ports 3074 and port 88 configured for PT.
-
You can leave the rules in, just un check mark to disable them.
-
Keep port triggering enabled for ports 3074 and 88 still and just disable ports 80/88 in GF?
-
just 3074.
-
Gotcha! Sucks I have all this time to think about tinkering with stuff and no time to test them out. I only got 20 games in since 2/1!:(
Just so we are clear, I will disable ports 88/80 in GF and disable port 88 and keep port 3074 enabled in application rules for port triggering?
-
Yes and in GF. Also would be interesting to know if you disable 53 in GF too, just use 3074 for GF and PT. ???
-
More ideas??? :-[ I need like a beta tester, hmm I think my son may be a good candidate!!! nah, I might feel to guilty if I screw something up and he does horrible one night.
Yeah I can't find much info what each individual port does for XBL.
-
Why not? LOL
Perhaps you could be ours LOL.
-
Having fun yet XS?
-
Not yet, still at work until Sat, however I disabled port 88 on PT and just left port 3074 enabled. I was only able to get two games in and they were both glitchy, I was teleporting from place to place. I wonder if the host had a lag switch or something.
Anyway hopefully my unbeknownst little beta tester will play after school and I'll see if he notices anything, lol. ;D
Anyway, did you ever look at the internet session logs when you were gaming to see what ports were being used XBL and what priority they were at?
If not I was going to do that tonight to make sure GF is working properly, (hopefully).
-
Another update:
I disabled PT on application rules last week and both me and my son are doing worse, more and more games we are going negative. I am not sure if it is a coincidence or not.
On my earlier post in this thread, I don't think adding the additional ports in GF rules did anything either
I remember when I first enabled PT he did a little better and I pretty much stayed the same however, I do remember winning more with it enabled.
Anyway, last night I enabled PT again to see if it has any effect in my game play or if I am imagining things. I will update later....
Will see what happens!
-
XS,
Quick question.. Do you have 1 360 in the DMZ?
-
Would be interested to review your router settings with you via teamviwer sometime. ;)
-
If you want, I would try this..
Put one Xbox up in DMZ.
Disable (Un-check) all forwards, etc. Basically, don't forward/trigger any ports to the xbox. Here is my settings in which my Xbox connects and plays fine. No Strict/moderate NAT.
Gamefuel (Blank):
Application Rules (Blank):
Virtual Server (No XBox 360 forwards):
Not sure if it would help you, but I think it's worth a shot. If you have 1 XBox in DMZ, the router shouldn't have any issues forwarding to the other XBox.
-
XS,
Quick question.. Do you have 1 360 in the DMZ?
Nope, I am not a fan of DMZ, so am reluctant to use it, I prefer security over lag, lol. I thought about it but its not worth to me to make one of my Xbox vulnerable to being hacked even if its highly unlikely. Anyway thanks for the tip.
It is probably just coincidence but I have been seeing a lot more lag even playing solo since disabling PT. My son and I played a few games the other day, I was doing good and he was lagging real bad so he quit playing, so I stayed in the same lobby with the same players and played solo, lag was real bad and I think I went 6/14! Wow! previous games I was positive!!! Anyway next time one of us stops playing I am going to back out to the dashboard and log back into to MW3 because it screwed something up in the lag compensation dept. by one of us quitting. :( I think MW3 is just broke and I should just give up tweaking stuff but my OCD won't let me. :-[

Me or Frag?
-
Me.
We need to set up some gaming time between us so we can see whats going on.
Do you have MW2 by chance? I suppose I should download B.O. ::)
-
I totally understand that you aren't a fan of DMZ. I'm not either, but I have never read of a case that their 360 got hacked/messed up while in the DMZ.
I think the 4500 is getting confused sending the packets to the correct 360. If one is in the DMZ, it doesn't have to worry about that 360.
Anyways, hope there might be another workaround for you.
-
Me.

Oh ok, yeah I have not changed much since you checked my settings out a month or two ago. The only tweaks I made were adding GF rules and using PT.
Yeah I have MW2 still but I have been working a lot lately :'(.
Frag,
I am pretty sure it just MW3 because in Bops we did not see any of these lag issues, well sometimes but no where near what we see now, but who knows...
-
Would be interesting to see if you and your son exhibit the same thing on MW2.
Let me know if you want a review. Also would be interesting to see if the original GF rules setup for XBL change anything on MW3. ;)
I'll go home tonight and reconnect my 4500 and see whats going on.
-
XS,
Curious here. Do you see this issue if you disable any PT and GF rules and just let the 4500 automatically handle the xboxes?
Leaving the following enabled:
Enable GameFuel
Automatic Classification
Automatic Uplink Speed
SPI NAT at Endpoint for TCP and UDP.
-
I even have the NAT Endpoint Filtering TCP/UDP set to "Port And Address Restricted" (Better security, but could cause issues), which I forgot to mention. ;)
-
Try the afore mentioned suggestion when you get a chance. ;)
-
Yes when PT is disabled I do and I have always used GF rules.
Also I use Endpoint Independent for both TCP and UDP.
FYI, When I run that line quality check at DSL reports, I get cleaner signal results but no first hop ping. not sure why.
Anyway, I will see how it goes with PT enabled and then if no improvement, I will disable the manual GF rules and PT.
-
Update:
Well I played with PT disabled and that was a bad idea. Anyway I enabled PT again last week and over all gaming is little better but I think MW3 is just a junk game. One thing I did notice with PT enabled is that every once in awhile I will have some sort of host advantage and I can run around knowing it, I will win most gun fights, probably because the other team is lagging and not me.
I do not see these types of games with PT disabled, so with that being said. I would recommend try out PF or port triggering. If you have one Xbox, use PF and if you have more than 1 Xbox use PT. I suggest trying it out for a week or so, improvements are slight but noticeable.
I wouldn't expect much since MW3 is one big lag fest but maybe you will see one to two really good games. ;)
-
I'll give this a try.
So far I've done the following:
1. Default settings on the 4500 and XBL(no PT,PF or GF rules) and default SPI/NAT settings NAT was OPEN: Gaming was ok. Never saw more than 3 bars on MW3.
2. Using GF and 3074 port only and 65 on remote IP range and SPI NAT EndPoint Independent: Gaming is very good except the occasional lag and I see full bars on MW3.
I'll try out PT tonight and test since I only have one xbox in use.
