Hi all,
I am trying to schedule a copy of folders from my primary DNS-321 to a backup...
I tried connecting using \\321name\sharename, select "Folder" and use the username & password that I know works on the primary DBS-321.
Not sure where I am going wrong...
-
hmm... no one have this issue besides me? Guess I have always been lucky that way :'(
Any thoughts would be more than appreciated!

What does it tell you when you click the Test button? Are you able to access that folder from your PC with those credential without any issues?
-
sorry, just re-read my original post... forgot to mention a few things!
I am failing at the "Test" button... I keep getting: "Test result: Failure
Please verify the URL,DNS settings, and your account settings."
Now, I have no problem connecting to the NAS using these settings (\\NASNAME\Share_Name) from other computers...
And, I have also tried fully-qualifying the path as well, instead of the share name... no dice!
And yes, I have ensured that I selected "folder" and not "file" in this case....
Again, sorry for the half-thought of an original post... thanks for any and all help!

Are you using this same method on you other unit and it works? Try the same function on your other unit and see if you are having the same issue.
-
I tried on both units... I also tried connecting to each other, and also trying to connect to shares I set up on my laptop (Vista).... no luck :(
-
Are all devices set to the same workgroup?
-
hmmm.... that is something to check... will get back to you once I have a chance to check! Thanks!
-
well, I checked the two NAS devices and my laptop.
They are all on the same workgroup (laptop shows all caps, that is the only diff)...
-
So I really am the only one with this issue? grrr... if I cant backup from one to another, dont know how useful these devices will be...
any ideas on how to figure out if the router is the culprit? DI-624

Try entering the IP address of the unit rather then the share name.
-
That did it!!
Test result: Successful
File size: Unavailable
Now, the $100,000 question: why is it not recognizing DNS name?
Great suggestion!

Now, the $100,000 question: why is it not recognizing DNS name?
Why should it - do you have a DNS (domain naming system) server on your network?
WIthout a DNS server there is nothing to translate a name to an ip address.
-
hmm.... pretty sure that my router does that... have to check it out...
I mean, I can access the NAS by name from my computer, so it must, right?
-
Nope.
Without a DNS server, Windows uses an old NetBEUI browse list technology, which unfortunately is known to be less than reliable, in a pure Windows environment, and even more so, in a mixed OS environment.
You could fix it by editing the host file on all of yor systems - everytime you change an ip address :P

This is related to Windows name resolution. In complex networks or sometimes even in simple network this resolution not working or some computers is not appears in network for long time. Microsoft tries to fix this problem by using WINS Server or combination of Microsoft DHCP and WINS, e.t.c. So don't be upset, this is Microsoft after all.
