Title: DIR-655 won't stay logged in while switching menus on browser screen
Post by: figureguy on February 19, 2012, 04:53:22 PM
I have a D-Link 655 router.  When I access it through my browser, and say I go to the advanced tab, most of the time when I click on any link in any settings it automatically brings me back to the 'login' screen.  Once I log in again, then it takes me back to the status screen.  For instance, I just logged on.  Then I went to click on the 'tools' tab.  I do, and it takes me back to 'login'  I do, and then back to status.  If anyone has any idea what is going on I would appreciate it.

Also, I have hardware version B1 and Firmware version 2.00NA  I see downloads for firmware 2.01NA and 2.03NA under support resources.  But my router says my firmware is up to date at 2.00NA.  Should I be updating the firmware as it shows on the website?

Thanks again.

What browser are you using? Try Opera or FF. for IE 8 or 9, set that to compatibility mode.

I'm using FF 10.0.2 with Windows 7 64-bit, if that helps.  It's just the oddest thing.

And it happens with FF too?

Yeah it does.  It's very frustrating, I was thinking the only way around it would be to not use a password so it didn't continually ask for it.  But I wouldn't feel secure without one, and this shouldn't be happening to begin with. :(

Could update FW, using the FW update sticky process.

I'm not sure what you mean by FW sticky process for updating.

I did try to do that with Firefox.  When I went to upload the FW, the screen wen't out and said The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.  When I tried through Windows 7, I came up with the screen to diagnose connection problems.  But since the FW files are on my HD, there shouldn't have to be a connection, should there?

Any chance you can test with a entirely different PC?

Unfortunately, no.  I only have the one.  I didn't know if setting the router back to factory settings would work.  When I did install it, I did have trouble with it recognizing that it was connected to my modem and the internet a couple of times.  But then it did and it worked.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Try using IE to update your Firmware.

I just did.  I went to D-links page and downloaded the FW with IE.  Then, I went to update it, and clicked on 'update'.  The window went forward to the next screen and said Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.  It asked to diagnose connection problems, I did, and there was nothing to display.  Help.

Can you do this? Disconnect everything from the 655, including the WAN connection to the modem and wire connect only one PC to the back of the 655(LAN Port. Do a factory reset on the router and let the PC get a new IP address. Using the IP address it gets from the 655, make it static on the PCs network properties. Input the IP, Subnet Mask and Gateway only. Save the settings.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.

Then clear ALL caches for IE or FF. Try to connect to the routers web page once again and see if it will be stable.

You can try the Recovery process too maybe as a last resort.

Ok, if I disconnect from the modem, how does the PC get a new address?  Ho0w do I make an IP static, I don't know where network properties is on Windows.  Where do I input the ip, subnet, etc.?

Sorry, I had a wired D-Link before and I had no problems.  This is my first wireless one.

DO NOT update the firmware using the wireless connection. Update it with a computer that is wired to the router.

I did.  I have the computer wired to the router.  I don't have wireless access on my PC.

I know when I first installed it I had a problem with the lights on the front.  The blue earth one would not connect when I first used the modem.  It would not recognize my internet.  I think I had to reboot both, all I know is that I had to call Dlink Tech Services.  I don't know if that helps or not.  Also, do I need to turn off my Mcafee while installing?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

Is the web page still not responding while the router is isolated from the modem and just with the pc connected?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Check cable between PC, Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. NEW Cat6 is recommended.

Possilbe after all this the router has a problem and should be RMA'd with DLink.
