Title: Dir-655 wireless connection set to mix mode, desktop can't connect to N mode?!
Post by: KevinAw on February 29, 2012, 09:56:50 PM
Hi all user,

i got a Dir-655 router and Dell 1501 wireless -N mini PCI card (802.11 bgn compliant). Router was set to mix mode but my desktop Dell XP8300 can connect only till G mode.

1) I search on web and some said that i need to set my router to N mode only for my desktop to connect to N mode. IS THIS SOLUTION CORRECT??

2) Another issue was my sis got other old brand latop which can only connect to B mode, if i set to N mode only,  she won't be able to connect it right??

Hope you pro guys can help out!! :D

Yea...D Link told me if you set it to G & N....but you have a G somewhere on your network....it will downgrade to G only. Which i think is dumb. Cause it makes me think "Whats the point for G AND N then".

Exactly, for mix mode include N mode (best mode).

Which is misleading for us, thinking that we got N mode network card and router, logically connecting to N mode. (In actual fact it downgrades automatically as long you got any coms connecting below N mode)

Yea...thats really stupid to have a G & N mode...whats the damn purpose? I mean...it should jusy use the G mode if you have something on the network with wireless G. And use the N mode if you have something thats N. But no...it downgrades. Superrrrrr misleading. So now...im using both of my routers.

I have a WBR 2310 that i was using before i got the 655. I have that one coming out one of my Lans in the 655 to the 2310. So now my nephew with the G laptop..is using G mode with the 2310...and my new laptop is using N with the 655.

The reason for Mixed ABGN modes is so that if users have devices that don't support N mode, they can still connect to the lower modes.

True...there can just be a separate G or N mode tho. Having a G & N mode is making people think there G laptop will use the G and there N laptop will use the N while in that mode. Thats what I had thought to. Alot of other people also. Doesn't make sense just because something on the network is G....the whole thing had to go down to G...even the wireless N laptop.

What happens if you set up Mixed ABG and N mode and connect a G device while a N is connected?

Everything goes to G. Even my N laptop. Seriously...how bogus is that? Whats the point of G & n then? You know.

Mine its the 1.34NA. Everything is working fine. So im thinking why upgrade. The 1.35 doesnt have anything to do with the G & N. Just removes the.....what is it...securespot.

Ok. I forgot that you had a Rev A. I'll check this out on a Rev B and see what the behavior is.

Its not always the routers fault, check the settings on the NIC cards and make sure they are using N.  I remember some of those Dell ones had issues early on with connecting at N and it was a settings change or driver update that seem to fix it.

If you are at N only on the router the B adapter will not connect.

I can confirm on my Rev B using v2.03 FW that I can connect 2 and 3 N devices and still connect a G device and the N devices remain connected at N mode and do not fall to G mode after the G device is connected.

Hmmm. I never tested it on mine...since D Link emailed me twice and said that wont work. Seriously....don't see why it wouldnt work. Dont you think its dumb to have a G & N....and have 2 different laptops connected and it only uses the G????? It defeats the whole purpose of G & N.
