Title: Why must UAC be disabled?
Post by: JKROMME1 on March 09, 2012, 01:07:51 AM
I was surprised that UAC was disabled during the installation of D-ViewCam 3.20, I did a search in the forum but could not found an explanation for this very strange restriction. Why should it? Via webbrowser you can still look at the video-images with UAC enabled!

I am trying to get it to work on my wife's vista and it won't work without the security being off. She is using the same as I am, MSE for the security  and mine is  working on Win 7 with the UAC running, so I don't have an answer so I unistalled it from hers.

The program seems not to be able to use the Virtualstore, and therefore the program needs to ask for permission every time as it primarily writes files in no-no locations for UAC. To circumvent this problem D-Link is not actively checking UAC status and failing the program (stopping) whing it is on.

No explanation from D-Link, so this is one I have to live with. My work-around is to run D-ViewCam within a VMWare Virtual environment in which UAC is off. Drawback: performance is a little lower, but still acceptable.

Just my $0.02

It's sometimes recommended to leave UAC off. It's really not needed unless your really concerned about programs you choose to install doing any harm to your system. With Vista, it's not adjustable unless they did some changes in SP2. I have not run Vista in a while. In most cases leaving it OFF is fully acceptable. Users just need to be aware of what they install. Most people consider UAC an annoyance.

except when programs are requiring UAC On ! ... such as SKYPE on Windows8 for example!!!  ;D

(and so this issue is very annoying on Windows8!)
