Title: Slow wireless speed
Post by: avasile on March 10, 2012, 05:14:12 PM
Hello everyone.
I am new to this forum but I was hoping I can get some feedback, ideas on why my wireless is so slow.
Here is what I have:
My speed to write to the NAS never went over 2.8 on both XP and 7. I read through forums and follow few steps by disabling some of the features but the same speed. I tried 2 laptops and the speed is identical.
If through Ethernet I get about 28 MBs but wireless 2.8 at the most - this is when moving an iso file at 4.0 GB
Any ideas are appreciated.
Thank you
Adrian

I just ran some more tests and the download speed is fixed at 2.3 MBs

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

 Cat6 cable is recommended.

I tried both settings and I noticed an increase from 2.3 to 2.5 when copying from computer to the NAS; weird, when going from NAS to computer is about 2. - 2.3.
Usually upload speeds are less then download.
In any case it did not help too much - right now I have mixed mode n and g and it seems to be better than what I had but still 2.5 is not great.
Any other choices? I am ready to start fresh but I really don't want to do it if it doesn't help or if is just a setting that I missed - the problem is that I never checked the speed of the WLAN so I am not sure how fast it was initially.
Thank you gain for your help
Adrian

Is the PC and NAS connected to the switch or connected to the back of the router?

All units are connected to the switch.
By units I mean the PC and NAS - so the layout is Modem, Router (Dlink) Switch and then NAS, wired PC, printer , etc

Whats the speed specs on the switch? Mb or Gb supporting?
What are the speeds seen if using Wired connections to xfer while connection to the switch. Should be very fast.

Switch is GB  - I haven't test the speed using the laptop wired but I am sure it will be fast. I can test tonight.

Then go back to N only and make sure you don't have any other devices connected while testing. Wire up the NAS to the back of the router and see what you get. Check the N only connection speed on the LT, you should be at 130Mb or 300Mb if your wireless care supports it and if you have the router set up for it.
