had this same problem last year and by a fluke i was connected to the internet so my wireless printer could access web services but one of my computers connected to the router kept disconnecting from the internet so i had to change the settings now i want to try to get the router connected to the internet again. my wireless network has no internet access so i know the router isnt connected to the internet but i am online right now through the router. My ISP is AOL Canada. I also had a message on the computer saying that the DNS server isn't responding. Any help with setting up the internet connection part of the router would be greatly appreciated. Also my internet has no network access if thats any help. Also i had the router set for DHCP NOT PPPoE or whatever its called. also what DNS should i put for the setting or do I need to put that on router setup page for the internet.
Also is there any way of stopping the other computer from disconnecting from the internet once i get the router connected to the internet?
One more thing on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen where the wireless icon is theres a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in over it how do i get rid of that when i had the router connected to the internet last year the yellow triangle was gone. And right now on the network map its showing an x through the line going from the router to the internet which i know means theres no internet from the router.

The router should automatically pick up DNS from the ISP. You can check this on the routers web page under Status/Device Info/Wan Section/primary and 2ndary DNS. This is recommended and should be listed here.
Have you contacted AOL for there assistance?

The ISP modem isn't getting any data to the router. Need to contact the ISP and have them help you ensure that data is getting to the 655 router.

I'm having same issue. I thought it might be the ISP, but when I disconnect from router, and connect directly to modem, I have no issues. I've been troubleshooting, resetting to factory, etc... No good. I did get wireless service for 1 day, but then it starting dropping and got progressively worse with every passing day. Now, nothing. I've given up. I've had it for 3 years now. It might just be that time to get something new. One more thing I haven't tried (firmware update). I'll give up after that. I've got a CISCO router ready to take it's place.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

could a filter on the phone cord be causing my modem not sending data to my router. i know youre supposed to have these filters on every phone jack in the house which i do. i hate the thought of calling AOHell cause they have you on hold for hours. im very frustrated right now. i want my router to work right and not having internet access to my network and not having network access to my internet really sucks. i also dont want to have the problem of my other computer which is connected to my router by ethernet cable disconnecting from the internet every few minutes once this is fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Also would having 2 25 foot long phone lines attached with a thing between them have anything to do with the problem i dont have a long enough phone line to reach from the phone jack to the modem.
-
If this is a DSL kind of ISP then ya you need the filters on. Its recommended to have the shortest length phone line and if possible a dedicated phone line for the modem. I would recommend shortening the length if you can and make it all one line with out any thing between the wall out let and the modem.
-
well the filter thats being used has two places for the phone line and the line going to the modem. and i cant make the phone line shorter cause the computer, modem and router are in the bedroom in the basement and the phone jack happens to be in another part of the basement. planning on moving the computer, modem and router some day to where that phone jack is but for now nothing can be done about it. might call AOL tomorrow but i doubt theyll be able to help me with the problem of data not being sent from the modem to the router. they dont deal with wireless. also where i live isnt a big city so maybe my internet isnt very powerful or something. i wish that AOL was one of the names on the list when you try to set up the internet for the router but its not there. might just give up altogether trying to get internet access to my wireless network.
-
Any other ISP options in your area? Cable by chance?
-
yes our cable company has internet but we havent decided to switch yet. also my boyfriend wont like it if im not on AOL anymore hehe. like i said in an earlier post i wish i could remember what i did last year to get it to work it was a fluke too.
-
So feelings rule out functionality? ??? You can still keep the AOL email address I bet if you switched. Sign up on the web mail.aol.com and use the free email there. :o
-
well my boyfriend seems to think me not having AOL is a problem. we talk to each other on AOL he lives 2 hours away from me so we dont see each other every day and if i switch to another isp he thinks i wont be able to talk to him every day. anyway dont know if I can call AOL today and have someone help me with my problem seeing that its Sunday. I'll just keep trying different settings on the router maybe I'll fluke it off again.
-
Its probably not the router. Keep trying w aol. Might get the phone compan to chk the phone lines in and outside the house. I would highly recommend ttry new phone line cables going to modem. Shorten the distance if u can. The better the signal to the modem, the better your modem will be and get better data to the router.
Changing from one isp is not going to effect how you communicate btn you abd your bf. just changes how the router communicates w a modem. Dont limit yourself by his thinking or his idea of how this werks. Aol isnt the only ISP out there and there probabl better svcs to be had by other ISPs. Why waste your money if your not getting good svc in the first place?
Goid luck.

just called AOL and they couldnt help me. They said if there is a problem with the internet service or the modem they could help me. they told me to talk to someone at D link. I knew AOL wouldnt be able to help me. And I was speaking to a female figures I dont even think she knows much. She asked me if my modem works when its connected to my computer and not the router and i told her that it does. So I dont know what to do now.
-
Maybe we can chk out ur router and modem remotely using teamviewer.com and see if we can get it working better for you.
-
okay i downloaded and installed team viewer now what? how would you check the modem remotely? i can see you checking out the router remotely but not sure about how you would the modem
-
Will have to set up a time when ill be home to chk it out. Maybe tomorrow?
-
okay just let me know.
-
from what i looked up about my modem i think its a modem/router. so could that be the problem? when im just connected to the internet by the modem/router i dont have a wireless network. my modem is a gnet model BB2060-Xl which only lets me connect to high speed internet so I got the dlink router so I could connect two computers to the high speed internet and also have my wireless netbook connect to the internet.
-
You can find out, if the 655 is hooked up, what os tue wan ip address it gets under status/device info? If 192.168 number, this means the modem has a router built in.
-
where would i look for that information? in the cmd ipconfig /all thing?

See if you can connect the Router to the aol modem and if you can get connected, run the teamviewer program and send me a PM message with the ID and PW.
