Title: Data Loss on USB Drive After USB Copy
Post by: Larz on March 24, 2012, 12:53:47 PM
Hello,

I tried backing up a 1.5TB USB Disk (NTFS) using the USB Backup feature.  I watched the process via the web file server.  I saw the folders created, but no files were copied in.

After several failed attempts, I unmounted the drive and attached it to my Windows PC.  The PC shows the drive as empty.

Thinking this might be an NTFS issue, I repeated the process with a small 8GB NTFS memory stick.  This backed up fine and remained readable afterwards.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before?

Has anyone had good results recovering the data from a drive affected in this fashion?

Thanks in advance for any advice, opinions, or consolation.

Best Regards,
Larz

Here's a little more detail:

I've run a data recovery program on the drive and find that there are ARM Linux OS files in the root. I.e. arm224_start.elf, arm192_start.elf, loader.bin, bootcode.binc, mdline_testmode.txt

This looks like the DNS-320 wrote OS files to the USB drive when it should have been backing it up.

Has anyone seen this before?

Any ideas on recovering the data?

Thanks!
