Title: Upgrade firmware to 1.35 NA from 1.21
Post by: eldiener on March 28, 2012, 06:39:19 PM
I have a DIR-655 Rev A4.

I followed this forum in the past when there were many problems with firmware upgrades beyon 1.21. Because of this I never upgraded and was told to be satisfied that I can still stay with 1.21 as upgrades caused problems for a number of people.

Has the situation improved with the 1.35 NA release ?

Everything still seems fine with 1.21 except the Shareport utility often does not pickup the printer connection upon booting to Windows Vista. I can always work around this by Disable and then Enable. It will then always find the printer. It is a minor annoyance however.

Should I still stay with 1.21 or is upgrading to 1.35 NA recommended ? If I upgrade to 1.35 NA is there a downgrade path back to 1.21 if the upgrade does not work well ?

SP was updated in v1.31. I don't have a Rev A 655 however my Rev B works well for it's SP.
There is no downgrade path back to v1.20.

If you choose to update, please follow the FW update sticky process for doing it.
Be aware that Rev A routers will not support IPv6.
Many people have a Rev A router and are working well for them on v.1.35NA.

Let us know how it turns out.

I have using 1.35 for quite a while now and I can say for my A2 unit, it has been VERY stable.  I would rate it maybe 98-99% with the only major issue being Shareport functionality which isn't a big deal but it would sure be handy if it worked properly.....

And Shareport is not really a part of the firmware, but then again it is.....

The A Hardware models do NOT have the Recovery Console.  There is no OFFICIAL downgrade route from the 1.3x firmwares to a 1.2x version.

I have a Rev B, so I thought that Rev A has a Recovery Console to. Sorry, my bad. After a search on google, I found that you can downgrade from 1.3x to 1.2x by factory reset the router and then upload the 1.2x FW, at least for EU version. For the NA version, first you have to upload a modified RU FW and then upload the 1.2x.

That's why I put the word official in capitals, that method of using the RU firmware is not supported by Dlink and if you do something wrong with it you will be SOL.

I could have written the OP's post myself.  It's probably 2 years since I was last here, reading about problems with FW upgrades on the DIR-655. At that point I logged out and decided to leave my A4 unit at 1.21.  It's still at 1.21 and seems to be working fine, so there it will stay.  I don't see anyone promoting any advantages beyond 1.21.

Just in case I have problems, is the RU Fw and the 1.21 FW still available anywhere ?

I do not anticipate problems with 1.35 NA but if I do I would like to think that I could return to what I have now if any problem turns out to be a showstopper.

I have 1.34 And the same router as youj..A4. I sign on AIM on my desktop...an stay signed in. Leave my desktop on for weeks. When i check my user name..it shows 12 days online...so it doesnt drop at all.

So for me..why upgrade to 1.35 if my 1.34 is doing it for me.

1.35 gets rid of the Securespot code.  I have been running it since it's release with no issues.

Yes, the modified RU is available on the website that explains how to downgrade, and the 1.21FW is available on ftp (dlink.com). But remember, this downgrade procedure is NOT offical and it's NOT safe.
