Title: DIR-655 pre-sale questions: SSH daemon, WOL
Post by: bigclaw on March 24, 2009, 02:48:54 PM
Hello, I'm very interested in getting a DIR-655 to replace my current WRT54GL, which has third-party firmware (Tomato) installed.

Of the specific features that I use most often, I believe the following is supported by the DIR-655:

1) QoS
2) static DHCP (I believe it's called DHCP reservation?)

On the other hand, I'm not sure whether these features are supported:

1) WOL. In my Tomato router, I can WOL any PC from the router admin GUI directly.
2) SSH daemon. I create an SSH tunnel to my router when I'm on the road so that I browse more securely.

I do have work-arounds for the above uses; however, those involve at least setting up another dedicated box.

Can anybody confirm that my understanding of the DIR-655 capabilities are correct? Thanks.

Neither WOL from the GUI or or SSH Daemon are included with this router.

Thanks for confirming this. I do have a "server" box that has the SSH daemon as well as OpenVPN running. I just hate having it on 24/7. I guess I can always punch a hole in the router firewall and WOL this box from the Internet (WoW). That way, the worst a hacker can do is intercepting my WoW request and wake up my server himself from time to time. Hopefully that won't be so interesting...
