hi everyone,
just succeeded in getting my DNS-325 format a WD Caviar Green 3Tb HDD and subsequently supporting it.
Right now, I have a samba sharing network working, but what I don't get is why every time I try copying a file from one of my computers to the NAS, the copying process stops between 100 and 700 Mb of copied data and reports an error. This is getting frustrating, all the more as I have nearly 5 Tb to transfer...
plus, my transfer rate is a shame: 2,5 Mb !!!
all transfers go through CPL plugs (200 Mps), but the transfer rate I normally get from computer to computer is fairly fast. I have no trouble watching HD videos which are located on another computer's hard drive, for example, which I am currently unable to do from the DNS-325.

Edit: my newly server-formated HDD failed the server SMART test. I guess the copy pb might stem from this.
question is: is the WD 3 To HDD actually compatible with this server. D'Link put it originally on the list, then took it off it, then answered on the phone that is still was...

Also Scan Disk is ok? or does it fail?
Data transfer rate is very slow. If you need to use power-line, try to use only 500 mbps devices (200 mbps are very slow for gigabit transfers). Anyway test the power-line devices using the manufacturer's utility (the remote device should at least provide 80 mbps or even more for decent transfers).

scan disk did fail too. I'm having a very hard time trying to correct the SMART failure.
I did buy some 500 Mps plugs to replace my 200 Mps ones, but I suspect the disk itself is no stranger to my transfer rate issue...
what manufacturer utility ? I did not see any designed to test the power line...

The utility is included on CD provided with your power-line device. For example D-Link's utility is named "D-Link Powerline AV Utility" (I have version 2.12), on main tab it gives for each device the "Device name", "Location" (local or remote), "Quality" (of signal), "Link Rate (Mbps)" and "MAC address".
With this utility is possible to find all possible problems inside the power-line.

Return the disk as defective and ask for replacement.
SMART is predicting drive failure. The drive will not get to better shape no matter what you do. I would not trust my data on drive where SMART data predicts failure.

I agree. When data integrity is of concern, it's always better to be safe than sorry. RMA the HDD.

thanks. I did return the faulty hard drive. I'm currently waiting for its replacement. will post afterwards.

got the new HD this morning. installed like a charm.
with the whole network fitted with 500 Mps plugs, I get a transfer rate of 7 Mo/s, which is not so great. I wonder if a NFS network might outrate my Samba one... I'm really new at this, so i keep wondering about stuff. I'll test the powerline as soon as possible, as I was advised to by Joe Public, but I guess I'll have to switch to windows in order to do so. I'm afraid the sluggish transfer rate is a direct consequence of the not so great power network I have in this old house. I'll try a direct connection to be sure.
Otherwise, everything's fine. thanks everyone. lots of stuff to learn before I can use my NAS up to its full potential..
EDIT: I plugged my DNS-325 straight into my internet box which acts as router, and got my transfer rate up to 9 Mps. Could that piece of hardware be the actual gullet ???

As a test, try disabling all DNS-325 services/apps and perform a transfer test between the DNS-325 and a PC on the same switch/router. On a GB network you should see substantially higher throughput than you are reporting.

trouble is, the router doesn't have a GB capability. I'm thinking about adding a GB switch to it in order to get an actual GB network.

The GB switch did the trick. I am now the ecstatic benefactor of a 27 Mb/s transfer rate. ;D
The only obstacle I have yet to overcome is adding a second hard drive without erasing the first one... I read some stuff but none of it was very enlightening...

If your DNS-325 only has one HDD, adding a second HDD (as a standard configuration) should not impact the configuration or data located on the first HDD

I think you're right. But just to be on the safe side, I did what somebody else suggested somewhere on this forum: get the first drive out, replace it by the blank one, format the blank one with the server's app, then switch it to the second bay and plug the first drive back in. The NAS had no problem with that and both drives work fine.
trouble is, I can't get both drives on a single aggregated RAID 0... but perfection is not of this world...
When plugging the NAS into the network by means of a CPL plug, I find myself back with my poor 8 Mb/s transfer rate. I guess the power line is just too old. I'll have to get back on a windows OS in order to put this to the test with the DLink app, of course.
That'll have to wait until Saturday, though.
