Title: Promiscuous Mode in the log.
Post by: Mark_KF8RV on April 27, 2012, 09:07:10 AM

Last night, I lost my NetFlix connection.  It was no biggy, I just restarted the Cheers episode that I had been watching.  This morning, I checked the DIR-655 log and the following is what I had found (date and times aren't accurate).

May 24 03:22:33     info     [1076865.190000] device br0 left promiscuous mode
May 24 03:22:29     info     [1076861.620000] device br0 entered promiscuous mode
May 24 03:20:20     info     [1076732.020000] device br0 left promiscuous mode
May 24 03:20:16     info     [1076728.140000] device br0 entered promiscuous mode
May 24 01:45:42     info     [1071054.590000] device br0 left promiscuous mode
May 24 01:45:39     info     [1071051.040000] device br0 entered promiscuous mode
May 24 01:39:18     info     UDHCPD Inform: add_lease 192.168.0.103  (the wired computer)
May 24 01:37:18     info     [1070550.420000] device br0 left promiscuous mode
May 24 01:37:15     info     [1070546.850000] device br0 entered promiscuous mode
May 24 01:29:21     info     [1070073.510000] device br0 left promiscuous mode
May 24 01:29:18     info     [1070069.930000] device br0 entered promiscuous mode
May 24 01:28:44     info     [1070036.280000] device br0 left promiscuous mode
May 24 01:28:40     info     [1070032.660000] device br0 entered promiscuous mode

Promiscuous Mode is usually the result of sniffing according to Wiki.  Whatever is promiscuous mode.  Also, I don't know what device br0 is.  I do have my Brother wireless printer connected to the DIR-655 but it's device name is BRW0022581FB096.  I was wireless at the time of connection problem, and the wired computer connected to the DIR-655 had been off.

Do you see this entry if you disconnect or turn OFF the printer?
Set up an NTP server to correct the time for the logs.

NTS now sets the time.  It's accurate but one hour off.

I cleared the log after setting NTS.

I turned the printer off.  No new log entries were made by the printer's disconnection.

I turned the print on.  No new entries were made by the printer's connection.

The log displays the initial lease of the printer and that's all.

Is DST set or disabled? I have mine disabled as the NTP server should set the correct time regardless of DST.

DST is disabled since enabling it didn't make any difference in the time.

The following is from my DIR-655 log:

Apr 27 20:17:14     info     UDHCPD Inform: add_lease 192.168.0.102
Apr 27 20:14:42     info     UDHCPD Inform: add_lease 192.168.0.102
Apr 27 20:14:31     info     UDHCPD sending OFFER of 192.168.0.102
Apr 27 20:10:49     info     UDHCPD sending OFFER of 192.168.0.101
Apr 27 20:06:30     info     Log cleared by Administrator
Apr 27 20:06:30     info     Log init

192.168.0.101 is the Brother MFC-J410W printer.
192.168.0.102 is the laptop which I'm using for this post.

You can see that the printer's lease isn't added like the laptop's lease.  Though, a lease is assigned to the printer when I check in the router's network settings (see below).  If I turn off the printer and then turn it on, the printer's lease is updated in the router's settings.  I never turn off the printer.  I just take it for granted that the printer's lease duration is somehow extended even if the printer is never turned off/on.

IP                   COMPUTER            LEASE
192.168.0.100  ROBERTSON-HP      Fri May 4 14:08:37 2012 (ethernet)
192.168.0.101  BRW0022581FB096  Fri May 4 20:27:27 2012 (g)
192.168.0.102  KF8RV-HP              Fri May 4 20:17:14 2012 (n)

You can see that the printer is assigned a lease, even though the lease wasn't added like the laptop in the log file.  The only difference is that the printer is wireless-g.  I have the router set for g/n.

Have you assigned an IP address for the printer ON the router or you letting it DHCP from the router? Try reserving the address.

I had had the address reserved.  Now I'm trying it via leased DHCP.

The printer's lease renewed (and updated) itself today in the network settings, although no log entry appears.

I just want to make certain the printer isn't the cause of any network bugs.  About all I know is, the printer uses the router as an access point.

The lack of not having any lease updates added in the log file does somewhat puzzle me.
