Title: "Server Unavailable" message when attempting to access FTP server.
Post by: sgip2000 on April 01, 2009, 11:38:17 AM
I have a DNS-323 behind a DIR-825 router and am having trouble accessing the FTP server.  I can get to the "root" but once I try to access folders a level down, I get an error stating that the server is down and not responding.

I have verified that port 21 is being forwarded to the DNS-323 port 21.  I have also tried with DMZ enabled for the DNS-323.

This is seen with firmware 1.05 and 1.06.  I'm getting this error via the local network and remotely.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Are you able to send and receive files from the root without and issue?

Update...I am now able to access the FTP server locally; however, it is still unavailable via the internet.

I have verified that port 21 is NOT blocked by my ISP and I have my router set to forward traffic on port 21 to the DNS-323 on port 21.

Are you now not even able to get to the root? In your previous port you were able to access the root folder.

So, it turns out that it works fine on the local network but when connected remotely the server looses the connection randomly.

I can see the root folder in the web browser but not in windows explorer.  If I click on the root folder in the browser, sometimes I can see files/folders and other times I get the server unavailable message.

So, I have narrowed the problem down to the DIR-825.  I swapped the DIR-825 with another router and it works.  Now I just need the DIR-825 fixed.

Instead of using Port Forwarding.. Disable the rule you created and apply it to Virtual Server and see if that makes a difference.

Already tried that.

Did you try an FTP client like Filezilla and see a log at any point? That would help to diagnose the problem also can you telnet the FTP port OK when using the DIR-825? I assume its OK since you can get to the root but its a good idea to verify.

Yes, I have.  I'll look at the logs.

Thanks.

The FTP client logs says:

[08:44:26] A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.
[08:44:26] Client closed the connection.

What is the Hardware revision and firmware version of your DIR-825?

Can you telnet the port from the WAN side?

You may be in a 'double NAT' environment. Have you tried DMZ-ing your router's WAN IP address in your modem's DMZ?

In my case, I have a Linksys WAG54GX modem router and an Asus WL-520GU where my DNS-323 is connected.

In the WAG54GX's DMZ, I placed my Asus WL-520GU WAN IP(ie 192.168.1.AAA). In the Asus WL-520GU I port-forward CCCC to 21 to the DNS-323's static IP address. DMZ in the Asus router is not active. My FTP in the DNS-323 is set to the default port 21 but my outside FTP port is set to 'CCCC' (ie server.myftp.org:CCCC) and it works within my network and outside of it.

Thank you for your response.

I don't think it's a double NAT problem since I have FIOS service which doesn't have a traditional modem.  When using a Westell 9000EM router, FTP access works as expected; however, with my D-link DIR-825, remote FTP access does NOT work.

I also have a DSL connection and I get the same results with that.

This leads me to believe that it is the DIR-825 router that is the problem.
