Title: Western Digital Red
Post by: Ignignokt7 on July 15, 2012, 06:42:26 PM
I'm curious if anyone has tried one of the new Western Digital Red NAS optimized drives in the DNS-320 and if there were any compatibility issues.  It could be marketing fluff I guess, but they sound interesting.

See the thread in the DNS-325 Disk compatibility forums, I asked this same question there.

These Western Digital RED drives are going to be very popular, due to price and due to their firmware being tweaked for NAS and RAID.

I don't understand why D-Link wouldn't test their NAS boxes for compatibility with these new drives!

Now I am saving up for a DROBO, which is compatible with the WD REDs.

Good Luck.

D-Link advised:

Based on the cross compatibility between all of the products you mentioned, I would presume there is a high likelihood of compatibility, although you'll have to either test this for yourself or look for other DNS-325 owners who tested these HDDs. Unfortunately, D-Link does not take HDD compatibility requests. Aside from the periodic compatibility lists D-Link publishes, this forum is the next best source for such information based on DNS-325 owner contributions.

Gotta love the marketing behind these... You'd almost swear that any existing drives out there were next to useless in a NAS, so you absolutely MUST spend an extra premium on these...

Having said that, a 3 year warranty in this day and age is pretty damn tempting (damn you Seagate!!!)
