Title: fastest way to transfer files onto DNS323

Have my media scattered over a few 1TB external drives (USB 2.0) wondering the faster way to move the data onto the NAS? Basically is there something faster than just plugging the USB drives into the computer and transferring over my GB network.

Windows7, getting r/w averages of 19/18Mbps.

I think you are stuck with what you have.

Here we have a dedicated machine with SATA  and IDE caddies.  That allows us to bypass using USB and access the drives directly and pass the data to the NAS over a GB network.  If you can duplicate that then you will only be limited to the speed of the network.

I can't say what speed we get for the simple reason we've never measured it but I will say it is adequate for our needs of cloning clients disks before repair or upgrade.

Unfortunately, the D-Link provided firmware does not support USB direct-connected storage devices via the rear DNS-323 USB port. Third-party alternative plugins exist that are designed to re-purpose the rear USB port to support direct connection of USB storage devices: "Fonz 's Fun Plug" or "FFP".
