Title: DNS-323 will not connect at 1000mbps
Post by: Starhammer on July 20, 2012, 02:34:26 PM
I've been running a gigabit network on a D-Link DIR-655 router for several years. During this time I'm pretty sure I've always had my DNS-323 connected at 1000mbps.

My DIR-655 recently went out so I replaced it with a DIR-857 and set up a new gigabit network (the PC I'm typing this on now is connected at 1.0gbps). When inspecting the firmware settings on my DNS-323 I noticed that it was connected at 100mbps. I set it to 1000mbps and it lost connection to the network, requiring me to reset it to factory defaults. Now the option to connect at 1.0gbps is grayed out and it's connected at 100 mbps again.

Anyone have any clue as to why this is going on? It's connected with the same CAT6 cable that it had been on and it's hooked up to the brand new DIR-857 gigabit router that everything else is connecting to at gigabit speeds with no problem.

Update: I also tried hooking my DNS-323 up to a Linksys EA4500 and it still would only connect at 100mbps, with the 1000mbps option grayed out. All other gigabit devices had no issues connecting at 1000mbps.

Has anyone else experienced an issue like this with a DNS-323?

Have you tried a different ethernet cable?

Yes, I have replaced the cable with a new CAT6 just in case.

Have you contacted D-Link support and what did they say?

Yes, I have replaced the cable with a new CAT6 just in case.

The DIR-857 (out of the box) with a clean Cat6 cable should provide a reliable wired gigabit connection across the ShareCenter series. Did you try setting the DNS-323 "Link Speed" to "Auto", or is the option completely grayed out?

The DNS-323 is set to auto. The 1000mbps setting is greyed out.

When I initially noticed that the unit was not connected at 1000mbps the relevant setting was not greyed out. I tried choosing the 1000mbps setting and the unit dropped out of the network and became unresponsive, prompting me to have to reset to factory defaults.

Since then, across three different routers and two different CAT6 cables the 1000mbps option has been greyed out and the unit is connecting at 100mbps.

Keep in mind this unit has been functioning correctly at 1000mbps for several years. I can really tell the difference too, backups from my pc's take longer now.

Do you have a GB switch you can directly connect the DNS-323 to for testing?

If you've connected other devices to this router and to other routers and they work at Gb speeds and the NAS seems to be the only problem child, I would presume that there is a issue with the NAS and is probably HW related. Let us know if you can test the Gb switch out and the results. Pay attention to the LEDs on the switch, if all other connected devices indicate Gb speeds and the NAS only indicates 100Mb, then you'll know.

I do have a gigabit switch. An 8 port D-Link Green series, in fact. I think it's a DGS-1008G.

I'll try testing with it. In this scenario the DNS-323 has been the only problem child, so it seems the issue is with it. I have a desktop, laptop and PS3 that all connect at 1000mbps with no issues.

Try connecting the DNS323 directly to your PC to at least see if the hardware link can be established correctly based on the LEDs. Some devices can exhibit connectivity issues due to varying chipsets and implementation.
