Title: Any way to stop apps like Internet Download Manager from choking the bandwidth?
Post by: sbjaved on July 22, 2012, 04:28:15 AM
My younger brother uses IDM to download files and it slows my Internet down to a crawl. I've tried reasoning with him but its not getting through to him. Is there any way I can use my router (bcz only I have access to it) to limit IDM? It's driving me nuts that I can't do anything about it. Is there someone smart enough to help me with this?

You'll need input separate rules for one PC and a separate rule for the other one(s). Set the one PC at low priority, say 200. Set the other PC(s) at a higher priority, try 50, then try 10 or 1 to test.

Thank you... its working but not that great. I read somewhere that QOS only shapes outgoing traffic, it has no effect on inbound traffic...maybe thats why its not creating that profound an effect... but still its better than before :)

You might have to talk to the person who pays for the internet and have them help your younger brother understand.

Maybe set up some access filters maybe if you know what sites he's going to. Ports if you can find them however IDM probably uses random port numbers.  ::)

Ya, unless you can get on his PC and go in and change the settings of IDM to download only one file at a time and to limit the broadband usage. Some downloaders have these options. Then again he might know how to change the settings back too.  ::) Good luck.
