I am somewhat confused about the right firmware. There seems to be different versions of 1.01, i.e., with b03 and b23 as well as vanilla 1.01. The date on the release notes says 19th April 2012 but the date on my router is 24th April. And now there is a 1.02.

B is for a beta version. You might give 1.02 a try. I would factory reset, update, factory reset once more then configure from scratch.
