Hi guys,
First time to the new BETA site. Looks pretty cool so far.
My question is. I have a Q-See surveillance system connected to my WAN, and have the Port Forwarding working, so I can see the camera's on my phone, but I am trying to make it so I can receive email notification of motion on certain cameras. The Q-See guys say I need to try disabling my Firewall settings to get this to work. Looked at my router settings and I am not sure which way they should be set, and be certain I don't screw up anything else. Also, I have to be honest. It's sort of a pain to get to the DVR and test this, so making a change then testing is cumbersome. I figured someone on here may have walked through this already and can help direct me to what setting will allow email to pass through that port.
I appreciate your help!!

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41537.0)
Lets gather some info here so we can get a better idea of your networking system.
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm)
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.
If you can provide some feed back and answers to some of these questions, this will help us get a better idea of what direction to point you in.

Unfortunately, now I am not at home so I can't get the specs off the Dlink itself, but I can fill in some of the other blanks. My DVR is plugged in via "Wire" (Cat 6). Just FYI. I have the Port Forwarding working fine, as I can see my camera's from my iPhone while away from home, so I got most of this working fine.
I have AT&T DSL, but the stand alone modem (Speedstream 5100) is from the SBCGLOBAL.net days, so that is what my ISP email address is on my modem & router. I do not know if it's in a bridges state, but I believe there is a 192.168.0.6 number in that location. (Not a 100%, but pretty sure - from memory).
I will give your suggestions a try tomorrow, after I get home. One thing, the Q-See tech guys suggested I turn off my Firewall and try again. So, I did put both settings to Endpoint Independent, then let the router re-start and rebooted my DVR, but still was getting an error on my DVR saying "mail sent error". The Q-See guys looked the snap-shots from my DVR and say that I have all the correct settings and such, so they believe its my Router holding up the mail pass-thru.
Also, uPNP is enabled already. This was needed for my Port Forwarding of my video stream to my iPhone.
I hope this help shed some light on this. Again, thanks for your help FUZZYNUTZ. ;D

Find out if your DSL modem is bridged and handing off a public IP address to the router. If not then this could be an issue with the router not being able to fully get traffic past the DSL Modem. If the DSL modem can't be bridged, check to see if there is a DMZ option on the modem.
You can test with SPI turned off just to see if the mail goes thru from the DVR then turn it back on after results.
Keep us posted on how things go.
Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.
-
One quick question. The Q-See guys are telling me to turn off the SPI and I should be OK. My question is. If this works, is it safe to leave it that way. Just trying to build up a list of things to try. If one works, I want to know my network is still safe.
Thanks....
-
No it's not safe to leave it off as it's the main Firewall program whats keeping intruders off your network. You could leave it off however you'd have to install 3rd party firewall programs on PCs. Still this leaves other non PC devices vulnerable. It's possible maybe there are ports used by this Q-See device that needs to be used and input into the routers port forward or application rules that will help the router pass thru this specific traffic that should be used. Ask and see if there are any specific ports needed to be configured.
-
That is what I thought.
I will ask Q-See about the ports...
-
According to Q-See there really are not other ports that need to be opened up. Because I am using a GMail account, and I have port 465 set on the DVR, that is all I need. Hmmmmmmm.....
I turned off the SPI and put both ports in Endpoint Independent and hit the "restart" button. Then, rebooted the DVR, but still no go. Now, please correct me if I am wrong. I do not need to power cycle the router (Dlink) correct? Just hit the restart button at the top of the Dlink page so that the router takes the changes. Right? Just being sure....
-
You shouldn't have to power cycle the router, the reboot should be enough. I would restart the connected device as well. If your using port 465, maybe you can try to PF or Virtual Server that port number and see.
-
I did restart the DVR, which is what is feeding the router to push my email through. Still didn't work.
I am trying to read up on some of this stuff, and I do wonder if setting up a Virtual server for port 465 would help.
-
Give it a try, won't hurt.
What HW is this router and what version of FW is currently loaded?
-
Ahh damn, I keep forgetting to grab that information for you. I will do that when I get home tonight.
One thing, could my modem be holding me up? I have an older Speedstream 5100 from the old sbcglobal days.
I'm not a network dude, so I am trying to figure out how one handshakes the other to make sure I don't have some block downstream. Ya know what I mean???
-
Possible, the only way to check would be to connect the DVR to directly to the ISP modem and see if it works that way if possible.
I would ask your ISP and see if there is a upgraded modem that is available. I recommend a modem that doesn't have any router features since you have a router already, theres no need for another one. ::)
Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Hey Furrynutz,
Here are the specs on my router....
Firmware : 2.00NA
Hardware version:B1
Thanks...
-
May upgrade to v2.03 and see if this helps
-
I will try that this weekend. Looks like the rev # is up to 2.07 now, so might as well upgrade to that. :)
I did notice one thing last night, but not sure if this could affect the issue. In my Port Forwarding tab I have a couple settings inputted. One of my settings does cover the port necessary for the email communications (465 - Gmail SMTP).
I am trying to find out (from Q-See) if this could cause conflict between the video forwarding via Upnp file transfers and the email forwarding necessary through port 465. Maybe, me setting these ports this way could be conflicting one or the other? I may be way out there, but don't know enough to make that call.
-
Use the FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0) if you upgrade. Keep us posted.

Yup!

Sort of off topic, but nevertheless important to share. I was messing around with my settings (connected wirelessly to my router) and after I made a change, to try and create a Virtual network for my DVR, I hit Save Changes and nothing updated (Count down did not start). I let it sit for a few minutes, but realized nothing was happening. So, I closed Firefox and reopened and tried to enter my router with NO success. For some reason, it did not like what I did last. As a matter of a fact, I lost connectivity all together. This was not good, as my son (Autistic) lives for his internet connection. Plus, having a teenage daughter not being able to use her iPad was ohhh so tragic. I ended up having to DEFAULT the router and also (Not sure why) was forced to change my password on my DSL modem. Every time I went to open a browser, AT&T would force me to a Password Save Recovery page. Then, I have to input a new password into the modem setup. Anyways, after a few hours of fighting it, I got it all working.
Lesson learned. Only make changes on your router when you are hard wired into it.
Now, back to trying to get my DVR to send emails out through my router. :D
-
You can manage the router via wireless however the router may have re-started which also cuts the wireless off so the browser may not have received the count down data to display. I manage my routers all the time via wireless. Keep us posted on the DVR issue.
-
So, have you ever had an issue where you lose all connectivity upon the router starting back up? I didn't really change anything but setting up the Virtual server and then hitting restart. I figured it would reboot the router, but everything would come back up and work as before. Hmmm.. Maybe just a fluke incident.
-
So, after dealing with tech support for a few weeks, another support guy got the ticket assigned to him and he came up with the resolution right away. He looked at my screen shots and had me change my encryption from NONE to SSL. BAM! Now I get a flurry of email screen shots to my phone. So many, that I had to turn it back off so that I can spend some time fine tuning the times I want the emails sent.
Anyways, I appreciate all of your help (FuzzyNutz), and i hope this will help someone else in the future. If someone reads this and needs help, feel free to email me and I will do what I can to help them out as well.
Thanks!!!
-
Glad they found the issue. I'll keep SSL in mind. Was the SSL setting on the DVR or on the router? Thanks for the feed back.
Enjoy.
-
(SSL) setting was on the DVR.
:D

Awesome. Enjoy.
