Since applying the new firmware yesterday, I have had intermittent periods of high latency across the LAN (up to 1000ms and more at times), and some packet loss, for both wired and wireless clients. This pretty much makes streaming media impossible and using the network painful generally.

BUT I will not blame the firmware just yet, as this could just be a coincidence - I'll post more later when I know.

Pleased to say that the above problem did not recur, so it must have been a coincidence.

And you were wired to the router?

Can you try this? Emergency Recovery Mode (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=44909.0)

Yup, I was wired to it.

I've replaced the router already so I can't try the emergency stuff... or maybe I can.  Gonna put it back on with just my PC hooked up.

You can, just with one PC and see if you can get the Recovery Mode screen to display. Don't need to reload FW since you got a new unit.
What version is currently loaded on this new router?
What browser did you use when you were upgrading FW?

I would from here on out, load code with out doing a factory reset before and after a FW update.

Wonder what happened to the first unit.  ??? I've got a unit on the way from Best Buy.

Also, were there any 3rd party security programs running by chance?

I didn't get a new unit, I used my old router.  This was already RMAed once (the config bag didn't show any text)

What version is currently loaded on this new router?
It's now 1.02 after the emergency recovery.

What browser did you use when you were upgrading FW?

Google Chrome

I would from here on out, load code with out doing a factory reset before and after a FW update.

I did do a factory reset before upgrading the firmware.  I saved my settings, factory reset, went in, loaded the new firmware, saw a continue button, hit it, and bricked the router.

Wonder what happened to the first unit.  ??? I've got a unit on the way from Best Buy.

The first unit was psuedo bricked.  I searched for an upgraded firmware for it, and it found one and I chose to install it (upgraded firmware was 1.01 with a newer date).  When all was said and done, I logged into 192.168.0.1 and I saw no text at all, just the gui images.

Also, were there any 3rd party security programs running by chance?

Windows Firewall and an anti-virus suite (with everything disabled except the AV).

Now a side point, I was on the phone with tech support for 40 minutes.  Not once did they mention this emergency recovery process.  Finding out about it AFTER getting a new RMA number, and replacing the router is very frustrating and annoying, not to mention I wasted 40 minutes of "Larry's" time who was from "Mississauga, Ontario."

Additionally it took me about 20 minutes to explain to him that I did not care about internet, and that it was the LAN that I was working on, and he did not know about loopback cables and expected me to plug the modem directly in to the computer using a standard ethernet cable and to have internet working.

All said I'm very frustrated with D-Link today.

Ok, one thing to help avoid FW update problems, I highly recommend using IE first off. Maybe FF as your 2ndary FW upgrade browser program. I have seen a few problems with Chrome and users using it before. Due to many changes in browser versions and there code development revisions, anything could change from version to version on Chrome browsers so I highly recommend using IE. I would also turn OFF ALL security programs while doing any FW updates. This will help prevent any interferences by that kind of software. Doing FW updates should be smooth however if something gets in the way or interferes with the sending of FW, corrupts the data stream, bad things can happen.

I have been doing FW updates for a long time now and haven't bricked a router yet. (Knock on wood). I tend to always use recommended uses of browsers and ways to update. This has always kept my FW updates successful. Again, Please use IE as your first choice in upgrading FW. General management can be done by Chrome and is a user choice. FW updates, don't leave to chance, use IE. FF as a 2ndary.

I've been doing them for God knows how long, routers, BIOS', video cards, external devices.  This d-link router is the FIRST one I've bricked.

Edit: If you work for D-Link can I send you my RMA number to get it cancelled and can you please give the emergency instructions to the call centre staff?

Again, I would use IE if your doing any FW updates. Chrome could be the possible variable that is causing the FW not to download correctly.

You'll need to contact RMA support by phone of you wish to cancel your RMA and if you didn't send the 1st unit back and you can get to the Recovery Mode on it and send the FW down using IE, then it's possible that unit can be recovered. I would talk to them if you need to. RMAs are not handled here in the forums. If you need to get past Level 1, ask for Level 2 support. Usually more experienced help there.

We are just a first line of support and troubleshooting before recommending RMA as a last resort.

Good luck.

FWIW in my feedback to them I linked this thread and told them they could've avoided two RMA's by having their staff trained on this emergency recover process.

I agree that there CS staff probably could be a bit more knowledgeable on doing more troubleshooting. I guess I depends on whats going on, and whats wrong and what there policy is for handling these. I presume the some staff members do know about this process. Usually these are corner case issues. Hope yours works well for you. And thank you for your feed back.

Enjoy.
