Title: BitTorrent File paths
Post by: Media User on April 12, 2009, 09:00:26 AM
HI

I recently got a DNS 323 to serve as a media server in my house, and its doing fine so far. The only thing is, when i use the bit torrent client,  I don't seem to be able to select my download path (dir inside the volumes). It immediately places my downloads in the "BT" folder. My question is : If  I later move the files that have been downloaded into the organization folders i have set up (in the volume itself, will the file stop seeding (will it automatically follow the file path that i have changed?)

Thanks :)

the torrent is set to only monitor the set folders.  you can modify the location by changing config files,  but moving the files out from them makes it so that the torrent client can no longer see them.

So, basically, if i move the file, it will stop seeding? and there's no way to customize the path of each file so that i don't have to move it to begin with?

I don't think that the included client is that good.

give this site a try if you are willing to fun-plug and install another torrent provider

To Arvald: Thanks for the links. I had a look at some of the options in the Wiki you linked to. Thing is, most of the alternatives use a distro of linux(server ed) and my DNS323 is running Windows NT (for some reason).
Are there any guides on how to uninstall WinNT and set up the Machine with Ubuntu (or DEbian or some-such). Also, the PC which i will be running the installation from is a Windows Xp system, does this affect the installation in any way? (most of the help docs for the alternative apps were using a distro of linux as well).

PS:  I'm really sorry if i'm being a complete noob here :)

the DNS should be running a linux variant.  to your windows machines samba will seem like windows NT.

The firmware updates are the applying of linux updates to the embedded system.

If your using an out of the box DNS323 then it is linux.  all you need to do is follow the instructions to install funplug and then the new torrent client... I have not done one of these yet.

The similar subject was already observed somewhere at this thread

Good news is that if you install Transmission you can move all imcomplete folders/files wherever you like and Transmission will continue the download (after verifying files left by BT).

My advise is: DON'T use the BT add-on. It will make you crash the entire web interface and you have to restart the NAS every day. It's a known issue. This Transmission software works much smoother and is more flexible to changes.
