Title: Installing a new drive

Hi. Currently my dns323 has only one drive connected. It's inserted into the first slot as Volume 1 in Standard Configuration. Like to ask if i were to put in a 2nd drive. Do i have to remap it using the Easy Search Utility.

I'm aware of the bug that will reformat the first drive. I'm told to remove the first drive first before reformating the 2nd drive. So like to know if i still need to map it after reformatting.

And is it true that my new drive will become Volume 1 while the old drive becomes Volume 2?

If you have the existing drive in the left bay you probably will see the drive name change from Volume_1 to Volume_2, if you have it in the right bay, there should be no change in the name.

You will need to map Volume_2, and if the drive name changes for the reasons mentioned above, you may also need to remap any shares that were mapped to it.

Which means when i insert the new drive, the old drive will become Volume 2 instead of Volume 1? Can anyone verify this as well? Can this be change to other way?

if you want to try something in preparation...
shut down the 323
move the old drive to the right bay.
start up.
should still be volume 1.
remove.
insert new drive into left bay.
start up.
format.
shut down the 323
insert old drive back into unit
start up unit.
old drive *should* be volume 1

anyone please correct me if I am wrong.

Arvald, you are not wrong - if there is a single drive in the DNS-323, it will be Volume_1 regardless of the bay it is in.  The unit names the drives dynamically as it finds them, this is normal with linux.

If there is more than one drive the unit will call the first logical drive it finds Volume_1 - if we're discussing standard volumes this will be physical drive 0 or the right side bay.

So which means the new drive on the left and the old drive on the right? I will still get Volume 1 on the right and Volume 2 on the left bay?
