****EDIT: I removed the network I use from "Manage Wireless Networks" and then re-entered my information. So far it's been working but I'll have to monitor it.
So, I got my refurbished 857 in today. It came loaded with FW v1.01 and I had issues with that FW with my first 857, so I immediately flashed it to 1.02. For a few hours it worked flawlessly, but then the wifi tends to hang and slows drastically.
My LT doesn't lose signal connection but wifi connection to the internet slows horribly. I did a speedtest and got 0.23 down and 1.7 up. I normally get 30+ down and 4.1x up.
If I reboot the router it fixes the slow issue for a while but then starts to drag again.
I thought it might have been a corrupted 1.02 download because I save the FW files in a folder. So I downloaded a "fresh" copy and it made no difference. I reset the router to factory, waited a bit till it booted back up, flashed it on a wired connection (never wireless) waited until the GUI appeared and I could access the router again and did a factory reset again.
My wife's LT is experiencing the same slow issue.
-
What radio are you connected too? 2.4 or5Ghz?
Forgot if you had other WiFi routers near by or not. Something might be interfering with the radio on 2.4Ghz. Got anything using 5Ghz to test?
-
I'm only on 2.4Ghz, no 5Ghz other than an XBOX with the wifi adapter.
I do have that AT&T RG that is broadcasting G band but it's never interfered before. I could probably turn off it's signal since we don't have internet through UVerse.

Keep us posted.

I very unhappy with this router. It gets super hot and then the wifi and internet just dies. I have 1.02 firmware installed. My ISP is Charter 100mbs download and 5mbs upload . I bought it because it said it can run everything you have in your house and it fails badly. 5ghz never works for my 3 Xbox 360's . Why did they make it so you can't stand it up so it can run cooler ??? D-link need to show some pride and fix the issues with router please !!!!

Vampero, these routers normally work great. I think I might have gotten a refurb that checked out "OK" but with use (hours of use) begins to show it's quirks. Please call DLink tech support and have them troubleshoot yours.
My first one, loaded with the original firmware (1.00) ran flawlessly and we have almost 20 devices connected though usually no more than 8 at one time.
Furry, I woke up this morning to find that it wouldn't connect to my wifi. I went to bed with it working fine. I had to do the unplug for 30 seconds and let the router reboot thing.
Here's what I have enabled:
Wireless:
2.4Ghz mixed N and G
Channel width auto 20/40
WPA2 PSK AES
5Ghz N only with same security as 2.4Ghz
Network Settings:
DHCP Server enabled with default settings
Advanced: QoS engine:
WAN Traffic Shaping Enabled
QoS engine not enabled
Firewall settings default with anti-spoof enabled
Advanced Network:
WAN Port speed set at 1000 MBPS
Multicast Streams: enabled
Everything else default except I configured the Time settings.
I turned off short GI just now and will monitor.

Kargo, let me know if you wanna to teamview and have a review of your router.
Either something on the router isn't quiet set right, any PC settings like the WiFi profile might need to be checked out, or there is some interferences maybe. Possible that you maybe got a bum return too. ::)
If needed, we could swap 857s if you want too. Not using mine at the moment. See if this problem follows. ::)
-
Sure bro! Let me download TV on this LT. I don't have it installed here.
Be back in a sec.....

PM me info. ;)

PM me info. ;)
So far, stable! Usually I'd see some slowness issue by now. :) Thanks bud. You may have to tell me what to turn back on one at a time to test what was giving me the issue.

Well, scratch that.
We went out for about an hour and when we got back the router wasn't broadcasting any signal. None. I had to reboot it and now it's up and working.
-
Factory reset and set up router from scratch. If you exibit the same thing, return RMA im thinking. Unless you want me to test it out.
-
I think I'll factory reset (for the 4th time now at least) and re-configure as one last shot. I'm thinking there was a reason someone returned this router and probably because of the issues I'm seeing.
-
It's running slow again and slow to respond. Like I'm on dial up.
How long do you have to let a router stabilize after a firmware flash? I start configuring right when I have access to the GUI. Am I doing that too soon?
Edit: I called D-Link tech support and they had me uncheck 'auto scan' under wireless settings, the manually select channel 11 and then enable auto scan again and reboot. She said monitor it and try this next time for channel 1 if I still get dropped wireless connections and then again for channel 6....which is what I started on.
-
Update: I haven't noticed any issues but I was gone all day yesterday for a work seminar. My wife said that it dropped signal for a while then came back up so I'll monitor it still.
-
This is with the manual channel set?
If this continues, I would call back DLink and get another. Ask for a new one LOL. Sorry your having so much problems. :(

Yes, sort of. I think that there might be a glitch with these and that's why she had me change the channel.
It was pretty simple, she had me un-check the Enable Auto Channel Scan box, set my channel to 11 then check the Enable Auto Channel Scan again and I think reboot. No problems today so far, so maybe what my wife experienced was something on the cable side. ???
They do still have a case opened for me so if it happens again I will request a new one.
-
Update: WiFi not dropping but slow internet and eventual loss of connection between router and internet occurs.
I called DLink again and requested a new, not refurbed/used DIR-857.
-
::) I presume that you don't see any WiFi issues on one of your other back up routers do you?
-
::) I presume that you don't see any WiFi issues on one of your other back up routers do you?
Not on the e4200, the DGL-4500, or Buffalo or Belkin. I do see it on the DIR-601 though. :P

Wonder if you just got a bum router. Keep us posted.
You didn't see this on the 1st 857 right?

That's what I think, too. No, the first router was great, damned Mother Nature and her fireworks! >:(
-
Ya, blame mother nature for your bathroom antics Kargo. OK. ::)
-
OK, got the 2nd refurb in.
They didn't send me a new one like I asked and this one smells like someone from Mad Men owned it for 15 years with an ash tray sitting on top of it. I got a nicotine buzz just opening the box.
Up and configured and it came with FW 1.01. I left it at that for now.
It seems like the last two refurbs I got had Bogota Columbia as the default time zone. Do any of you remember if that was the default for yours? I'm wondering if this is normal.
-
:o makes me wonder if the air filters were clogged for the refurb section. LOL.
Wow. Smells of smoke huh? Thats crazy.
I wanna say that I think I remember the time zone was set for something odd when I first got the 857. Been too long though. Keep us posted on how it goes.
-
I would set it up from scratch and not load any config files. ::)
Wonder if thats what the problem was for the original owner of this particular unit, too much smoke? ???
-
Would be funny if router was from some drug cartel. :o
-
::) Just keeps getting better and better man.
-
LOL, I wish it was loaded with some other kind of "Firmware" but at this point just coated on the outside with Marlboro Lights particulate.
OK, like the other it was giving me slow speeds but only after 15-30 minutes. On a whim I unplugged our UVerse 5Ghz AP to see if that was the issue, but it's not. My wifi speeds drop to 1.0Mbps as registered on the adapter window.
I flashed to 1.02 and reset to factory and then configured from scratch. Don't know what else to do. ???
Edit to Add: I changed my channel from 6, to 11 and now it's on 1. Using inSSIDer I'm not showing anyone nearby on my channel and it's been pretty stable for the past 10 minutes.
-
Have you turn OFF all WiFi devices cept for your LT and tested yet?
Theres go to be something with your environment maybe.
Keep us posted. If anything, might ship me that unit.
-
Also do us a favor and take a screen capture of the Wireless status and post it, with everything connected when this seems to occur.

No new wifi devices and the ones that are connected are: my and wife's iPhones, son's ipod, son's xbox (wifi), son's desktop computer. I also have the UVerse RG wifi OFF. So the only nearby wifi is the UVerse 5Ghz but nothing uses 5Ghz except for 1 XBOX with the wifi adapter and it's rarely used (wife's).

Edit: Will do, be back later, have to go exercise....

When the UVerse 5Ghz WiFi is on, is the 857 5Ghz WiFi on as well?
If so, have you set up manual Channels for each on the modem and 857 using same SSID and pw?
Do you notice any problems if you shut off both 5Ghz radios on the modem and 857? Just leaving the 2.4Ghz radio going on the 857?
-
Your using chl 1 on the 857 now on 2.4Ghz? Whats the channels set for on the 5Ghz radios?
-

Yes, channel 1 on 2.4Ghz on 857 and the UVerse AP (which is a separate unit from the residential gateway) is 5Ghz on channel 244 or something WAY up there.
I'll turn 5Ghz off on the 857 and see.
-
OK, the 5Ghz on the 857 is now off and my wifi speed according to my adapter is 130Mbps.
Why it's not at 270 or 300 I don't know. The adapter is set for auto 20/40Mhz so it should be capable of those speeds. I get those on my DGL-4500 (243-270Mbps).
It's never actually disconnected or dropped the signal yet.
-
Cuz u connected to 2.4Ghz on 857 or modem. Turn off all wireless on modem and then chk ur connection on 857 at 2.4ghz. Then turn of 2.4ghz on 857 and turn on 5ghz and test. Might make sure chl is 30s or 40s on 857.

Well, I think I found the problem. I made a noob move and forgot that I was supposed to use IE to flash and I used Chrome.
I reset to default and flashed and then reset to default again before configuring. WiFi was then stable and at 243-270Mbps but pages didn't load right on my LT. So, I reset to default and flashed to 1.02 again using IE. I forgot to reset to default and began configuring then remembered and stopped, reset to default twice and then configured. So far, stable but we'll see.
Another odd thing. When I reconfigured the first time and used the wizard to connect, I got the time zone as Pacific Standard time. This last time, I got the Bogota, Lima, etc. time zone.
-
OK, now I was back to square one with the slow speeds.
So I reset to default and am now configuring not using the router's wizard nor the CD wizard.
Furry, getting back to your suggestion, I don't have a 5Ghz LT adapter to really test that frequency.
-
I was just typing this post to say that I think I have it stabilized and working and then I lost internet connection but not wifi connection. ???
I'll have to monitor it still, of course but I did change the channel width to 20Mhz instead of 20/40MHz which seems to have stabilized the wifi.
-
It's my LT's wireless card. I tried an older LT but with a better wireless card and it's stable and on 5GHz I get 405Mbps on 5Ghz frequency.
Luckily, most LT wireless cards are pretty cheap. I found the "better one" on ebay for $15.
-
Kargo, in all seriousness, I would call D-Link back and request a new unit (or another refurbished unit).
-
I would call this a contaminated unit. It may have pass some sort of RMA testing and deemed usable electronically, however the internal parts are contaminated. I wouldn't be accepting of this.
-
Sounds like Dlink is pushing out recycled products to help keep their overhead low :-\
-
Keep us posted on how it goes Kargo.

I spoke with the RMA department and the customer service lady said she'd give her manager/supervisor the info and that he'd call me back in 24-48 hours. That was on Friday but I haven't heard from him yet.

FIX -
OK, after a LOT of troubleshooting with the help of Furry, we found a fix to my issue.
I have AT&T UVerse for TV but Charter High Speed for internet. The UVerse uses a Wireless Access Point (WAP) which connects to the UVerse residential gateway (3801HGV).
My first 857 wasn't affected by being in close proximity to this WAP so I didn't give it much thought when troubleshooting my subsequent, refurbed 857's.
Well, come to find out these last routers are very susceptible to interference from the WAP on both 2.4Ghz and 5.2Ghz.
I moved the WAP about 12-14 feet away from the 857 and my wifi signal strength and connectivity have stabilized.
So, if any of you have ANY WAP's of any type near your 857, I would strongly suggest you moving them as far from the 857 as possible. Save yourself a headache and disappointment.
-
Glad we were able to find the fix.
Just so everyone knows, having multiple APs near others will cause connection stability issues, specially on the same Freq, even though they are running different channels. Unless your running one AP on one Freq, i.e 2.4 and another one a different Freg, i.e. 5Ghz, that can work ok if in close proximity. In most cases using multiple APs, it's always recommended to place them as far away as possible from each other and host routers with wireless built in, as a standard.
Glad it's working better for you Kargo.
Enjoy.
