Title: Firmware 1.30 Posted for 1 day and now removed???
Post by: Peter_G on April 15, 2009, 03:20:49 PM
OK what happened?
This is a little concerning. Both the newest firmware and Shareport Mac/PC software, gone!
If there was a bug, what happens to those that did the upgrade? If I can't roll back to 1.22 or 1.21 what happens now. It's taken a long time to get this up. Hopefully there will fix and a repost very soon.
On a brighter note. Shareport 1.10 PC and 1.01 Mac seemed to connect nicely although the Cosetup does not work for Leopard 10.5.6 I used the 10_4 package and it installed fine. The PC version both 32 bit and 64 bit installed with no instances.
But my internet connection still seems to be a little rough. Up and down like before.

It shows in the list but you get an error if you try to download,  plus if you click more in the revision info it only shows revision info up to 1.21.

Have thus far been using 1.30 effortlessly. Seems the same as 1.22. Anyway, I neglected to download the Shareport 1.01 for Mac. If somebody has a download link, I'd like to try it out.

Where is ''there''?

On the FTP, it was still there when I posted the reply and all complained that it was gone. Perhaps only the http link was gone :-)

And on the FTP site it isn't listed as of this morning, and the link

http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=530&sec=1#firmware

is to the USA Site. The disclaimer state it's for Products made in the USA only so it may or may not work for anyone outside there borders.

A little feedback from the moderators would be nice.

This is the second time that DLINK has posted new firmware and in less than one day removed it. This goes to show to what extent they beta test their software before its release. Let's be glad they aren't in the business of manufacturing perscription drugs.

I would love it if some responsible DLINK representative would respond to this protocol as it is their product that is the last line of defense between our home networks and the internet.

I believe it's time to begin shopping around for a product who's support for software releases are a little more serious than those of DLINK.

As soon as this posting is removed from thier site I plan on doing what I should have done long ago, shop around.

I made very explicit remarks/warnings about firmware with no fall-back option,
and kept on replying at people who obviously though that I was making no sense and was called a troll along the way. Actually the thread was blocked.
I for one totally agree with you.

You weren't trolled because of that, you know better than that.
There are situations thinkable that have no fallback option. This is one of them. You can keep shouting that it shouldn't be like that, but the fact remains: it's non-downgradeable. People who read the changelog before upgrading knew about that.

Nonetheless, I agree cmopletely that Dlink has indeed miscommunicated a lot of important info when putting it live, no question about that. And their internal process is really bad. To put it mildly. But screaming 'murder' really does not add to the situation. Trust me, they know...

Wow, Look at the website. They've re-posted the same firmware but now with a warning. Just like I said. they are using the public as their guinnee pigs.

Meanwhile what about those who DLINK installed this garbage yesterday?

WHERE IS THE SUPPORT DLINK?

I WANT MY MONEY RETURNED!

DO YOU PEOPLE EVER LEARN YOU LESSON?

I also noticed that its called a "Beta".  I missed it yesterday or whenever, so did the one then say that?

I really wonder what is happening at Dlink. They really act like a headless chicken.
I want more assurance before going on to the irreversible road.

My advice: do not upgrade to 1.30 without more info

Now site says "Beta for testing only"

IF YOU CAN'T DOWNGRADE HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO JUST USE FOR TESTING PURPOSES DLINK?

Note: This firmware does not allow downgrading and has removed 802.11b Mode.

Please read release notes before upgrading.

Please send me a "New" router DLINK.

It was DLINK's negligence that rendered it inoperable.

Please respond DLINK people.

While I think Dlink should have made it more obvious, atleast it was in the changelog.  Did you not read it?

If you can hold off from upgrading to 1.30 go for it..  Again When the firmware was posted yesterday it did state it removed 802.11b mode and it could not be downgraded. So you should have read what you were doing before you upgraded. It's posted in red.

There are allot of mixed feelings about removing b mode some agree it's better and some don't. Personally I agree doing so would cause some havoc. Again, you don't have to upgrade.

The change was always in the release notes.

Before I had it taken down, the point about downgrades and removing 802.11b was added in the product description box in red because I heard of cases where people did not read (all black letters in change logs get ignored). I took the code down not based on calls coming in (I thought I solved the people who don't read), but because of dedicated forum users who thought the messaging of new code as "official", killing 11.b, and making the code not down-gradable were too large of steps and I agreed.

It is back up as a beta (it was tested and passed), but the changes being so bold means I really want people to know what they are after before using it. Beta wording should give me that.

The associated share port codes are also posted and I expect a non-down-gradable 11.b support code to be offered soon (no ETD, soon to me).

- I dont need 802.11b
- 1.30 was released without warnings (exept downgrade warning)
- 1.30 was released as final firmware
- I need shareport MAC support

I did upgrade to 1.30. So, is this my fault if i messed up my router because of this upgrade? Think not.
Anyways, i dont think this is going to be a big problem. Lets wait and see what they give us next. I think theres only 2 options.
1. future firmwares are not downgradable, but with 802.11b supported etc. so we all have to think carefully if we want to upgrade or not.
2. future firmwares are allowed to downgrade, and 1.30 users can upgrade to it and downgrade again.

hah, dlink should have a confirmation that they've read it and at the end a captcha like thing that forces them to read like

what is the character count of the changelog? ____  <submit>

It was in the changelog though.  Although I am not sure it wasn't NUMBER 1 on the list, that part doesn't make sense.

The removal of '11.b' isn't a big deal to me since I am on g/n only now. The BIG thing is the fact you cannot downgrade to a previous version...which you would think would be a support/RMA nightmare for D-Link...that part of has me scratching my head.

Most important thing should be that the guy(s) calling the shots at Dlink realize that this has the appearance of a hasty wrapping up of the 655 lifecycle. I bet this is gonna be the last update we will see.

Which, looking at WiFi Alliance certification, is unthinkable with the b removed. Although you agree that the firmware was tested and OK-ed, there has not been a public beta. And be honest, the beta testers on the board have come up with lots more improvements and points to repair than the internal Dlink beta testing process.

When you add the non-downgrade ability to that upgrading is more or less Russian Roulette. In that regard, although having been very supportive towards Dlink all these months, I am very disappointed.

You do not need to take my numerous suggestions on the Dlink firmware process seriously. But I do work in the same line of business in IT (and so are many others on the board) and lead software implementation programs for large institutions. Just to put things into perpspective.... And everything that can go wrong does go wrong at Dlink. Time after time.

The topic isn't correct anymore.

In a several more days I am sure the new code changes coming through the lab that will bring us back to posting questions and having discussions.

Next time I just might let it go and not worry so much on the back-end if firmware is misused....but I do have at least 2 people over that day that had 11b products and still upgraded, it may not be a lot compared to who viewed the code, but it wasn't zero.
